Description
The McAllister Laboratory at Emory University is seeking a highly motivated, dependable, and detail-oriented Research Specialist to join an NIH-funded research program investigating the mechanisms underlying endometriosis-associated pain.
The Research Specialist will contribute directly to preclinical studies using rodent models of endometriosis and chronic pain. The position will focus primarily on behavioral and preclinical animal research, including rodent handling, pain-related behavioral testing, assistance with surgical and pharmacologic studies, biological sample collection, data management, and coordination of day-to-day experimental activities. The Research Specialist may also support complementary laboratory studies as the research program evolves.
This position is well suited for someone who enjoys hands-on animal research, can manage detailed study schedules, and is committed to generating reliable, reproducible, and well-documented research data. The successful candidate will work closely with the Principal Investigator and other members of a collaborative research team and will have opportunities to develop expertise in behavioral neuroscience, translational pain research, preclinical study design, and additional laboratory techniques.
This is a 12-month, full-time appointment, with annual renewal anticipated for up to four years based on satisfactory performance and continued funding.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Under general supervision, performs a variety of defined research and laboratory tests and experiments according to prescribed protocols and assigned schedules.
- Sets up experiments as prescribed by a principal investigator.
- May be required to participate in laboratory maintenance activities such as sterilization and cleaning of equipment, ordering of supplies, inventory and media preparation.
- Maintains records, files and logs of work performed in laboratory notebooks and computer databases.
- Compiles data and records results of studies for publications, grants and seminar presentations.
- Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.
- Performs related responsibilities as required by principal investigator.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Support preclinical behavioral studies through rodent handling, weighing, health monitoring, and experimental preparation.
- Conduct pain-related and other behavioral assessments according to established protocols and study schedules.
- Assist with rodent surgical procedures, drug administration, dosing studies, postoperative monitoring, and study endpoints.
- Collect, label, document, organize, and store biological samples generated during animal studies.
- Coordinate experimental timelines, supplies, equipment, and study materials to ensure that research activities remain on schedule.
- Assist with preparation of figures, data summaries, presentations, manuscripts, grant applications, and research progress reports.
- Follow all institutional animal care, IACUC, biosafety, laboratory safety, and research compliance requirements.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in a scientific field OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in neuroscience, physiology, biomedical sciences, pharmacology, or a related field.
- Prior experience working with rodents in biomedical research setting preferred.
- Experience with molecular biology, biochemistry, or mammalian cell culture.
- Experience with rodent handling, behavioral testing, surgical assistance, drug administration, or postoperative monitoring.
- Ability to work independently after training and collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary research team.
NOTE: Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location. Remote work from home day options may be granted at department discretion. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
