What jobs are in computer networking?

Network jobs refer to roles that involve the design, implementation, management, and troubleshooting of computer networks. These positions can include network administrators, network engineers, and network technicians, who are responsible for ensuring the smooth operation and security of data communication systems within organizations. Network jobs are essential for maintaining connectivity, supporting communication, and enabling the sharing of resources such as files and internet access across computers and devices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a network engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Network Engineer, you need strong knowledge of networking protocols, infrastructure design, troubleshooting, and a relevant degree or certification such as CCNA or CompTIA Network+. Familiarity with network hardware, firewalls, routers, switches, and management tools like Wireshark or SolarWinds is typically required. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for diagnosing issues and collaborating with IT teams. These skills and qualities are critical for ensuring network reliability, security, and optimal performance in modern organizations.

What is the difference between a network engineer and a network administrator?

A network engineer is responsible for designing and building a network, as well as for acquiring and locating required physical components. A network administrator is responsible for the daily functionality of the network, ensuring reliability and data security. Admins create and remove users and group permissions, following best practices for network security. Both jobs require specialized technical knowledge and coordination with stakeholders throughout the organization.

What are some typical challenges faced by network engineers in maintaining network security, and how can they be addressed?

Network engineers often encounter challenges such as managing vulnerabilities from outdated hardware or software, mitigating the risks of unauthorized access, and responding to evolving cyber threats. To address these issues, engineers regularly update and patch systems, implement robust firewalls, and use intrusion detection systems. Collaborating closely with the IT security team and staying current with industry best practices are also essential strategies for maintaining a secure and resilient network environment.

Job description

Description

The Network Architect is a senior individual contributor responsible for designing and evolving Fervo's network architecture across corporate IT, hybrid cloud, and site environments. This role is the subject-matter expert for the Fortinet Security Fabric, with deep ownership of FortiGate, FortiSwitch, FortiAP, FortiManager, FortiAnalyzer, FortiNAC, and Fortinet Secure SD-WAN. The Network Architect will also define how the Fortinet platform integrates with Cisco-based OT networks, cloud services, and cybersecurity controls.ย

This is a hands-on architecture role, not a strategy-only position. The Network Architect will establish standards, explain the rationale behind design decisions, and advise technical and executive stakeholders, while remaining close enough to implementation to support commissioning, major changes, and complex incident resolution. This individual will partner closely with the Hybrid Cloud Architect, cybersecurity, site teams, network engineers, and external providers to build a network platform that is repeatable, supportable, and increasingly delivered through automation and CI/CD.ย

Requirements

Responsibilitiesย

Network Architecture & Technical Directionย

  • Design the target-state architecture for enterprise, cloud, WAN and SD-WAN, wireless, and site connectivity, balancing reliability, security, maintainability, scalability, and costย
  • Own architectural standards and lifecycle strategy for the Fortinet Security Fabric, including high availability, capacity, firmware, licensing, and platform roadmapsย
  • Define secure integration patterns between Fortinet-based IT networks and Cisco-based OT environments, including routing, segmentation, access control, and resilient interconnectsย
  • Produce reference architectures, topology diagrams, technical decision records, configuration standards, and implementation guidance that serve as the network source of truthย
  • Evaluate design options and clearly communicate recommendations, tradeoffs, and risk to engineers, business leaders, and executivesย

Automation & Platform Engineeringย

  • Develop and execute a roadmap to move network provisioning and change management toward version-controlled, automated delivery through CI/CDย
  • Build reusable templates and automation using FortiManager, APIs, Python, Ansible, Terraform, or comparable infrastructure-as-code toolsย
  • Establish testing, validation, monitoring, and rollback practices for automated network changesย
  • Partner with the Hybrid Cloud Architect to design secure, scalable connectivity across cloud and on-premise environmentsย

Delivery, Reliability & Operationsย

  • Remain hands-on with configuration, deployment, commissioning, upgrades, and troubleshooting of Fortinet and Cisco network infrastructureย
  • Serve as the senior escalation point for complex network incidents, leading root-cause analysis and durable remediationย
  • Lead network design and delivery for new site builds, plant commissioning, expansions, and infrastructure refreshesย
  • Guide routing and switching, BGP and OSPF, SD-WAN, VPN, QoS, wireless, network segmentation, and high-availability designย
  • Use FortiAnalyzer and related tooling to improve observability, performance management, capacity planning, and operational readinessย
  • Coordinate with managed service providers, vendors, Fortinet support, and Cisco partners to maintain service quality and drive issues to resolutionย

Security, Governance & Team Enablementย

  • Design and enforce firewall policy, network access control, segmentation, secure remote access, and logging standards in partnership with cybersecurityย
  • Support incident response, risk assessments, audits, and remediation by providing network telemetry, evidence, and technical leadershipย
  • Review network designs and changes, mentor engineers and contractors, and raise the team's ability to reason through design decisions rather than only execute configurationsย
  • Create runbooks and operational standards that make the environment easier to support and reduce dependence on individual knowledgeย

Qualificationsย

Requiredย

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, information systems, or a related field, or equivalent practical experienceย
