What jobs are in computer networking?

Network jobs refer to roles that involve the design, implementation, management, and troubleshooting of computer networks. These positions can include network administrators, network engineers, and network technicians, who are responsible for ensuring the smooth operation and security of data communication systems within organizations. Network jobs are essential for maintaining connectivity, supporting communication, and enabling the sharing of resources such as files and internet access across computers and devices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a network engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Network Engineer, you need strong knowledge of networking protocols, infrastructure design, troubleshooting, and a relevant degree or certification such as CCNA or CompTIA Network+. Familiarity with network hardware, firewalls, routers, switches, and management tools like Wireshark or SolarWinds is typically required. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for diagnosing issues and collaborating with IT teams. These skills and qualities are critical for ensuring network reliability, security, and optimal performance in modern organizations.

What is the difference between a network engineer and a network administrator?

A network engineer is responsible for designing and building a network, as well as for acquiring and locating required physical components. A network administrator is responsible for the daily functionality of the network, ensuring reliability and data security. Admins create and remove users and group permissions, following best practices for network security. Both jobs require specialized technical knowledge and coordination with stakeholders throughout the organization.

What are some typical challenges faced by network engineers in maintaining network security, and how can they be addressed?

Network engineers often encounter challenges such as managing vulnerabilities from outdated hardware or software, mitigating the risks of unauthorized access, and responding to evolving cyber threats. To address these issues, engineers regularly update and patch systems, implement robust firewalls, and use intrusion detection systems. Collaborating closely with the IT security team and staying current with industry best practices are also essential strategies for maintaining a secure and resilient network environment.

The Network role is more strategic, while the Network Administrator handles operational tasks to ensure network stability and security.

What careers are there in networking?

Careers in networking include roles such as network administrator, network engineer, systems analyst, and cybersecurity specialist. These positions involve managing, designing, and securing computer networks, often requiring knowledge of protocols, hardware, and certifications like Cisco CCNA or CompTIA Network+.

What do you do in a network job?

A network job typically involves designing, implementing, managing, and troubleshooting computer networks to ensure reliable data communication. Professionals in this field configure hardware and software, monitor network performance, and maintain security protocols, often using tools like routers, switches, and network management software. Certifications such as Cisco CCNA or CompTIA Network+ are common for these roles.

Trade IT complexity for capability with solutions that elevate possibilities, and advance with certainty, knowing you have BlueAlly as your ally in next. BlueAlly. Conquer Complexity.

Job Description

This role is for an Engineer I with a strong Linux background, deep experience in network monitoring platforms, and the coding skills to automate and extend what those platforms can do. You have around 8 years in the field and youโ€™re comfortable operating independently from day one โ€” no ramp up hand-holding required. Youโ€™ll work on a complex, large scale enterprise environment where your ability to keep critical monitoring infrastructure running, scripted, and optimized directly impacts network operations.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver technical work as a mid-to-senior team member, taking ownership of your area within larger projects while operating within BlueAllyโ€™s quality standards
  • Administer, maintain, and extend network monitoring platforms in a large enterprise environment, including updates, patches, and configuration
  • Develop and maintain scripts in Perl, Python, and shell to automate monitoring tasks, integrate systems, and support reporting functions
  • Produce clear, accurate technical documentation and present findings or recommendations to client stakeholders
  • Recognize when project impacting issues need to go up the chain and act on it.
Qualifications
  • Around 8 years of hands on experience in enterprise networking or systems engineering, with meaningful depth in network monitoring and management platforms
  • Strong Linux platform experience โ€” youโ€™re comfortable with system administration, package management, scripting environments, and troubleshooting at the OS level
  • Solid working knowledge of network management and monitoring products; experience with SNMP based monitoring tools in environments of 1000 or more network devices
  • Proficiency in Perl, Python, and shell scripting โ€” you write real automation, not just quick fixes
  • Working knowledge of SNMP MIB analysis, trap parsing, and SNMP table polling; experience configuring monitoring systems to manage Cisco and multi vendor environments
  • Familiar with networking and routing protocols including TCP/IP, EIGRP, BGP, OSPF, and MPLS โ€” enough to understand and troubleshoot what youโ€™re monitoring
  • Able to operate independently from day one โ€” you come in, assess the environment, and get to work without needing someone to walk you through it
  • Able to produce polished technical documents independently and to a professional standard
  • Understands how project financials and forecasting work; independently manages your own forecast
Work Location

This position supports a program based in the Woodlawn, MD area. Candidates located outside a 50 mile radius of that area are welcome to apply. For those candidates, regular onsite presence will generally not be required; however, we do ask that new hires plan to spend approximately one week onsite following the completion of system access and credentialing to meet the team and become familiar with the environment. Ongoing, weโ€™d ask for at least one day onsite per quarter โ€” or a combined multi day visit that covers multiple quarters โ€” where feasible.

Education
  • CCNA level certification or equivalent preferred; hands on experience in network monitoring and Linux administration carries significant weight
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree or equivalent
