Is networking a high paying job?

Network operation roles often offer competitive salaries, especially for those with certifications like CCNA or CCNP and experience with network infrastructure. Salaries vary based on location, experience, and company size, but networking jobs generally provide good compensation compared to many other IT roles.

What are some common challenges faced in a network operation role and how are they typically addressed?

Professionals in Network Operation roles often encounter challenges such as network outages, security incidents, and the need to maintain high uptime. Addressing these requires strong troubleshooting skills, familiarity with monitoring tools, and the ability to respond quickly under pressure. Team collaboration is essential, as network operation centers (NOCs) often work closely with security teams and system administrators to resolve issues efficiently. Regular training and clear escalation processes also help ensure smooth network operations and minimize downtime.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a network operation specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Network Operations Specialist, you need a solid understanding of networking protocols, troubleshooting, and network infrastructure, often supported by a degree in IT or related field. Familiarity with network monitoring tools (like SolarWinds or Nagios), ticketing systems, and certifications such as CompTIA Network+ or Cisco CCNA are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and the ability to remain calm under pressure set standout professionals apart. These skills are crucial for maintaining network uptime, quickly resolving issues, and ensuring seamless connectivity across an organization.

What is a network operation?

Network Operations refers to the processes and activities involved in managing, monitoring, and maintaining computer networks to ensure their optimal performance, reliability, and security. Professionals in network operations oversee network infrastructure, troubleshoot connectivity issues, and implement upgrades or repairs as needed. Their responsibilities often include monitoring network traffic, responding to incidents, and ensuring compliance with organizational policies. Network Operations Centers (NOCs) are typically staffed by teams who work around the clock to keep networks running smoothly. Effective network operations are crucial for minimizing downtime and supporting business continuity.

A Day in the Life

You'll start your day reviewing network health, monitoring alerts, and addressing priority issues impacting system performance. Throughout the day, you may design new network infrastructure, troubleshoot complex routing or connectivity challenges, collaborate with field operations during deployments, or evaluate opportunities to improve system performance through upgrades and automation.

You'll work internally cross departmentally and with vendor partners to ensure projects stay on schedule, network performance remains strong, and future expansion efforts are successfully implemented.

What You'll Do

  • Plan, implement, and support network upgrades, preventive maintenance, and new technology deployments.ย
  • Manage technical projects by coordinating timelines, budgets, vendors, and cross-functional resources to ensure successful execution.ย
  • Evaluate network initiatives and provide technical recommendations that support business objectives and long-term growth.ย
  • Translate technical concepts and project updates into clear, actionable information for leadership and non-technical stakeholders.ย
  • Collaborate with internal departments to provide technical expertise, support network expansion initiatives, and improve operational processes.ย
  • Maintain accurate documentation of network designs, configurations, and implementation activities.ย

What We're Looking For

  • Strong understanding of network architecture, routing, switching, and troubleshooting methodologies.ย
  • Experience managing technical projects and balancing multiple priorities simultaneously.ย
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.ย
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate technical concepts to a variety of audiences.ย
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across departments.ย

What Will Help You Stand Out

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience implementing or supporting telecommunications or broadband networks.ย
  • Experience troubleshooting and supporting VoIP technologies.ย
  • Experience with wireless networking technologies including Ubiquiti UniFi/UNMS, Siklu PtP/PtMP, or Enterprise WiFi.ย
  • Experience deploying and supporting GPON technologies.ย
  • Experience with eLAN and eLINE network deployments.ย
  • General knowledge of telecommunications services including internet, voice, and wireless technologies.ย
  • Industry certifications such as CCNA, CCNP, JNCIA, or equivalent.ย
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Network Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.ย

Desired Attributes

Beyond the qualifications, these attributes are what make someone a great fit for our team:

  • Analytical - You enjoy solving complex technical problems and identifying root causes.ย
