Network Engineer Salary information

What is the average salary of a network engineer?

The average salary of a network engineer varies depending on experience, location, and industry. In the United States, entry-level network engineers typically earn around $60,000 to $75,000 per year, while more experienced professionals can make between $90,000 and $120,000 annually. In some tech hubs or specialized industries, salaries may be even higher. Certifications and advanced skills can also positively impact earning potential.

What factors most commonly influence a network engineer's salary in the industry?

A network engineer's salary is influenced by several factors, including years of experience, technical certifications (such as Cisco's CCNA or CCNP), and familiarity with specific technologies or vendors. The size and industry of the employer, as well as geographic location, also play a significant role—network engineers in larger cities or in high-demand sectors like finance or technology often command higher pay. Additionally, roles that require managing complex or large-scale networks, or those that include leadership responsibilities, typically offer higher compensation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a network engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Network Engineer, you need a solid understanding of networking protocols, network design, and troubleshooting, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with routers, switches, firewalls, and certifications such as Cisco's CCNA or CCNP are commonly required. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help professionals excel in diagnosing issues and collaborating with IT teams. These skills ensure secure, efficient, and reliable network operations essential for organizational productivity.

What is the difference between Network Engineer Salary vs Network Administrator Salary?

Salary differences depend on experience, location, and employer size.

Are network engineers still in demand?

Yes, network engineers are in high demand due to ongoing growth in IT infrastructure, cloud computing, and cybersecurity needs. They are essential for designing, implementing, and maintaining network systems, often requiring skills in routing, switching, and certifications like Cisco CCNA or CCNP.

Is network engineering well paid?

Network engineering is generally a well-paid profession, with salaries often above the median for technical roles. Factors such as experience, certifications like CCNA or CCNP, and working in specialized environments can influence earning potential.

The initial 8-week pilot will support three Providence locations across Oregon and Washington, replacing and validating LAN switches and wireless access points. Following the pilot, the program is intended to scale across approximately 90–100 Providence sites.

A key objective of Medasource's involvement is to create opportunities for qualified military veterans and military spouses within Providence's technology organization. Veterans, transitioning service members, National Guard/Reserve members, and military spouses with relevant technical experience are strongly encouraged to apply.

Job Description

The Lead Network Engineer will serve as the senior technical resource for one of two field deployment crews supporting Providence's Network Lifecycle pilot.

Each Lead will oversee a four-person deployment crew consisting of the Lead Network Engineer, two Network Engineers, and one Network Cable Technician. The Lead will be responsible for directing technical execution in the field, performing switch migrations, overseeing network cutovers, troubleshooting deployment issues, and ensuring successful validation following infrastructure changes.

  • Experience supporting enterprise wireless access point deployments or replacements
  • Strong network troubleshooting and problem-resolution skills
  • Experience working within MDF/IDF and network-closet environments
  • Ability to perform connectivity testing and technical validation following network changes
  • Previous experience leading engineers, technicians, or network deployment crews
  • Strong documentation and communication skillsAbility to work effectively with project managers, engineers, technicians, client stakeholders, and third-party partners
  • Ability to support maintenance windows and off-hours cutovers as required

  • Providence Health experience
  • Experience leading field-based network deployment teams
  • Military experience within networking, communications, Signal, cyber, IT, telecommunications, electronics, or similar technical specialties
  • Military leadership experience supervising technical personnel or field deployments
Military Veteran & Military Spouse Initiative

Military talent is a primary sourcing focus for this engagement. Candidates with military backgrounds should be evaluated based on the technical and leadership responsibilities they performed in service—not solely on whether they have held an equivalent civilian job title.

Relevant military networking, communications, infrastructure, troubleshooting, technical leadership, and field-deployment experience may translate directly to the responsibilities of this position.

Education/Certification(s)/License(s):
  • Bachelor's degree preferred but not required with equivalent professional or military experience
  • CCNA, CCNP, or comparable networking certification preferred
  • Relevant Cisco certifications are a plus
  • Relevant military technical training and demonstrated hands-on networking experience may be considered in place of traditional education or certifications
