Job Description: Manufacturing Engineer Intern

We are currently looking for a self-motivated individual with a continuous improvement mindset and passionate about learning to join us for summer 2026! This internship is intended to give a rising college senior hands-on experience and exposure to a variety of different engineering- and quality-focused responsibilities throughout the Elgin facility as well as visibility to the broader Shakeproof division.
This internship will also provide an excellent introduction to ITW. This individual will have the opportunity to meet with other interns and ITW leaders across the enterprise, work closely with an engineering mentor, participate in development workshops, learn more about ITW's seven industry-leading segments. The successful internship candidate will also have the opportunity to learn and participate in a fast-paced Automotive Industry environment.

Job Description
  • Supports engineering with the evaluation of customer's dimensional, mechanical, material, finish, heat treat, and performance requirements.
  • Determines dimensions, tolerances, material specifications, tool steel requirements, tool lives, machine capabilities and routings, and finish requirements based upon ITW & vendor standards
  • Develops a proper set of manufacturing and quality paperwork including product prints, tool prints, bill of materials, routing, inspection test requirements, finish requirements, and special gage design.
  • Updates B.O.M.'s, product prints, and engineering standards.
  • Completes computer drawings, material ordering, requesting quotes, creating mock-ups of parts.
  • Drive continuous improvements and cost saving initiatives including tooling communization, tool life, improvements, etc.
  • Assists in the maintenance of engineering department records such as drawings, product specifications, part number controls.
  • Assists with sample and production runs supporting plant personnel in resolving machinery and tooling problems as necessary.
  • Inputs and updates engineering files on computer network.
  • Designs parts on AutoCad and/or SolidWorks.
  • Assists in implementation of workplace organization project in accordance with ITW 80/20 practices.
  • Tests parts on laboratory equipment and tracks performance data.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Rising college senior pursuing a Bachelors degree in mechanical, manufacturing, or industrial engineering.
  • Interest in the automotive, or other manufacturing industries.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office and AutoCad experience strongly preferred.
  • Prior Engineering Internship Experience preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating, and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds
  • Understanding of and compliance with safety rules and regulations

Compensation Information:
$20 per hour
