Job description

Role Summary
Free People is seeking an Associate Print Designer to help bring expressive, apparel-driven prints to life across the Collection Femme categories. This role is centered on creating original, repeat artwork-developing conversational prints, engineered placements, and thoughtfully crafted repeats that enhance the silhouette and storytelling of each piece, from dresses to soft wovens and knits.
Working closely with the Print Team, the Associate Print Designer plays a key role in translating the Free People aesthetic into distinctive, wearable prints that feel both elevated and effortless. The ideal candidate has a strong sense of how print interacts with fabric and form, and can create artwork that not only looks beautiful on the page, but truly comes alive in apparel.
Role Responsibilities
  • The Associate Print Designer will contribute to the creation, development, and execution of own brand prints appropriate for Free People. They will assist in creating new prints that represents the unique style of the Free People customer within our Collection range focused on Femme and Only @ FP categories.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with the design director, design, and buying teams to develop prints for both retail and wholesale divisions. Attend and actively participate in design flow meetings.
  • Utilize traditional drawing, painting, and other arts and crafts techniques, along with Adobe Creative Suite, to create artwork, layouts, and colorways.
  • Collaborate with our product development and technical designers to set up engineered prints.
  • Create print layouts and provide colorways, collaborating with the color team to align with specific color palettes.
  • Conduct research and develop specific print designs to realize the Print Director's vision.
  • Source vintage textiles and prints, as well as digital image libraries, for print inspiration to be used in original artwork designs.
  • Stay updated with fashion trends, particularly those related to print and color, and incorporate them into artwork while ensuring freshness and brand appropriateness.
  • Generate CADs to communicate the placement of print designs on garments and create technical packages for artwork to be sent to vendors and factories.
  • Maintain organized file folders using established saving and naming conventions to facilitate easy access for teammates.
  • Keep the office and workspace tidy and organized.
  • The ability to effectively manage deadlines and contribute to the growth of a dynamic team is crucial for excelling in this position

Role Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Textile Design, Surface Design, Fine Art, Illustration, or related experience required.
  • 3-4 Years Design industry or related experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong sense and understanding of the Free People Customer and how Fashion Trends could translate to new and exciting designs. Ability to identify new trends and how those can relate to print designs.
  • Strong sense of technical print design, understanding and passion for surface design and making of repeat prints.
  • Experience in print and textile design with a strong foundation of hand drawing/painting and digital rendering.
  • Technical skills in Adobe Creative Suite and NedGraphics (preferred).
    • Enthusiasm and willingness to explore creatively using AI platforms. (MidJourney, PromeAi) knowledge/experience would be a plus!
    • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office 365.
  • Self-starter with the ability to function independently as well as in a team-based environment
  • Great attention to detail, strong sense of urgency and ability to thrive in a fast paced, deadline driven environment.
  • Strong sense of organizational skills and proactiveness, great communication skills and ability to multitask.
  • 4-5 days in office Philadelphia PA - Home Office Navy Yard.
