General Function
Performs a variety of tasks related to advising students regarding career direction and program/course selection. Conducts orientation, prepares academic and career plans, identifies and resolves student barriers, maintains student records, monitors student progress.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provides academic and career counseling to new and prospective students; explains policies, procedures, and program requirements; and assists students in selecting educational and career goals.
- Advises and counsels students in developing career and academic plans and planning and selecting courses and activities that meet educational and career goals.
- Consults with students regarding academic, career, and personal problems or barriers and assists students in obtaining support to meet these specific needs.
- Reviews, interprets, and evaluates applicant assessment results and other information to determine eligibility status.
- Maintains library of educational and career information; reviews and updates information as necessary.
- Designs, schedules, and facilitates training sessions and workshops for students for career and advising purposes.
- Assists in coordinating visits of prospective students to College; answers questions and provides information regarding admission requirements to prospective students.
- Maintains extensive student records, and monitors student progress. Writes detailed case notes, scans documentation and records progress on individual goals and student related expenditures, incentives, and supportive services. Inputs student activities under appropriate codes in NCWorks.
- Guides students through processes as they prepare for work and training. Assists in acquiring items needed for training and work including books, medical screenings, uniforms, tools and more
- Refers students to work experience activities and internships; communicates progress, guides students in job-seeking activities and career exploration
- Develops relationships with businesses and programs in the community and college to share program information and ensure students have access to needed resources, services and opportunities
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements and Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and one year of experience in student coaching, counseling, or academic advising; or
Associate degree and three years of experience in student coaching, counseling, or academic advising
