The Head Athletic Trainer for the Austin Spurs is responsible in providing comprehensive healthcare, injury prevention, rehabilitation, and performance support for all athletes on the Austin Spurs roster. The role also involves coordinating care for two-way players in conjunction with the San Antonio Spurs medical staff. This position will oversee the supervision of the Athletic Trainer QAA to support all medical and performance protocols, assist in planning daily team activities, and medical logistics. This role demands high-level collaboration, proactive communication, and attention to detail in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.
Who You Are:
  • NATABOC Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC).
  • Licensed (or eligible) as an Athletic Trainer in the State of Texas.
  • Current CPR/AED certification.
  • Master's degree in Athletic Training or related field.
  • Recommended 1-2 years of experience working with elite level athletes.
  • Holding as well, a Physical Therapy degree and active licensure is highly valued and considered a strong asset for this position.
  • Must have understanding of injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and return-to-play protocols within sport environments in conjunction with team policies and protocols.
  • Familiar with EMR / AMS systems, medical documentation, and basic data management.
  • Must uphold confidentiality and ethical standards in all aspects of player care and data handling.
  • Effective interdisciplinary communication with medical, performance, coaching, and front office teams.
  • Composed decision-making under pressure, particularly in acute injury or game-time scenarios.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage medical operations, documentation, and team travel logistics.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Strong operational ability with an attention to detail.
  • Possess a strong work ethic
  • Must be punctual and accountable daily
  • Must be trustworthy and have a positive attitude
  • Ability to stand, sit, walk for long periods of time and to lift, push, and pull 50 lbs on a regular basis.
  • Must be available for a high volume of non-traditional work hours, weekend and holiday work, and 40+ hours/week and travel.

What You'll Do:
  • Coordinates all aspects of injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and return-to-play strategies for the Austin Spurs roster.
  • Oversees the supervision of the Athletic Trainer QAA for the Austin Spurs.
  • Support arrangement and transportation of player medical appointments as required.
  • Execute and document all NBA and G League medical protocols, including injury reporting, physicals, baseline testing, and compliance documentation.
  • Coordinate with team physicians and external medical providers for exams, diagnostics, specialist referrals, and treatments.
  • Serve as lead game day medical provider, including pre- and post-game care, court-side management, and emergency response.
  • Manage inventory, ordering, transport, and budgeting of medical equipment and supplies.
  • Planning, coordinating, and executing team travel logistics, including communication with staff, scheduling, itineraries, and medical/travel documentation.
  • Support collaboration with Human Resources and Finance for workers' compensation, insurance processing, and vendor invoicing.
  • Serve as a liaison with the San Antonio Spurs medical and performance staff to ensure seamless continuity of care for two-way and assignment players.
  • Support San Antonio Spurs medical and performance staff with duties as assigned outside of Austin Spurs season.
  • Assist Summer League staff playing a primary role as an athletic trainer for Summer league competitions (e.g., California Classics, Las Vegas).
