What is a natural gas scheduler?

A Natural Gas Scheduler coordinates the transportation and delivery of natural gas between suppliers, pipelines, and end users. They manage nominations, track gas flows, and ensure that deliveries align with contractual agreements. The role requires strong attention to detail, analytical skills, and knowledge of pipeline tariffs and regulations. Schedulers work closely with traders, marketers, and pipeline operators to optimize supply and minimize imbalances.

What are the daily responsibilities of a natural gas scheduler?

As a Natural Gas Scheduler, your daily responsibilities include coordinating the movement of natural gas across pipelines, confirming nominations with trading partners, and monitoring supply and demand balances. You will update schedules in real-time, communicate with pipeline operators and internal stakeholders, and respond to scheduling changes or emergencies as they arise. Additionally, you may be responsible for reconciling imbalances, verifying flows against contracts, and generating reports for management. This role requires a high level of organization, technical proficiency, and the ability to remain calm and efficient under pressure. Because the energy market is dynamic, you'll often collaborate closely with traders, analysts, and other schedulers to ensure seamless and compliant operations.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a natural gas scheduler?

A Natural Gas Scheduler needs strong analytical abilities, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of energy markets and logistics, often supported by a degree in a related field such as business, finance, or engineering. Experience with industry-specific scheduling software (like Quorum or Aligne), proficiency in Excel, and familiarity with ETRM systems are highly valued, and some companies may prefer candidates with certification in energy or logistics management. Excellent communication, multitasking, and problem-solving skills enable effective collaboration with traders, pipelines, and clients under tight deadlines. These qualifications are crucial for ensuring accurate, timely gas scheduling and mitigating costly operational risks.

How much do natural gas schedulers make?

Natural gas schedulers typically earn a median annual salary between $60,000 and $90,000, depending on experience, location, and company size. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced schedulers with certifications can earn higher wages, especially in regions with a high demand for energy professionals.

How to become a natural gas scheduler?

To become a natural gas scheduler, candidates typically need a bachelor's degree in engineering, business, or a related field, along with knowledge of energy markets and scheduling software. Relevant skills include strong analytical abilities, attention to detail, and understanding of regulatory requirements. Gaining experience through internships or entry-level positions in energy companies can also be beneficial.

What do natural gas schedulers do?

Natural gas schedulers coordinate the movement and delivery of natural gas by creating and managing daily supply schedules, ensuring that gas is transported efficiently from producers to consumers. They monitor pipeline operations, communicate with suppliers and transportation companies, and use specialized software to optimize flow and meet contractual obligations.
