Job description

  • Research, develop, and produce compelling data visualizations, infographics, maps, and interactive graphics that enhance storytelling and audience understanding of complex topics.  

  • Collaborate with reporters, editors, photographers, and digital teams to identify visual storytelling opportunities and support news coverage across multiple platforms.  

  • Analyze datasets, public records, and source materials to uncover trends, insights, and story angles that can be communicated visually.  

  • Design and create accurate, engaging, and visually appealing graphics that adhere to editorial standards, journalistic ethics, and brand guidelines.  

  • Translate complex information into clear, accessible visual content for diverse audiences while maintaining factual accuracy and context.  

  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously and deliver graphics on deadline in fast-paced news environments.  

  • Verify data accuracy and ensure all visual elements are properly sourced, documented, and fact-checked before publication.  

  • Develop multimedia and interactive storytelling experiences using digital tools, coding, and visualization software to increase audience engagement.  

  • Monitor emerging visualization techniques, design trends, and newsroom technologies to improve storytelling capabilities and production efficiency.  

  • Support breaking news coverage by rapidly creating charts, timelines, maps, and explanatory graphics for digital and print publication. 

  • Contributes to teamwork, facilitating tasks of teammates, as needed  

  • Meets VOA standards for productivity, quality, and meeting deadlines  

  • Works independently as a member of a team  

  • Fluency in target language (written, spoken) and deep knowledge of the target area, plus fluency in English (written/spoken)
