Job description

Senior Network Engineer

DESCRIPTION: Design, implement, test, secure and operate the mission network infrastructure at NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility (WFF). Network engineer working at Wallops must have advanced knowledge of Cisco routers, switching, and security. Successful candidate will provide network design, implementation support, and troubleshooting services. The Senior Network Engineer will work closely with a Network Asset Planner and an IT Security Lead on day-to-day tasking and priorities related to engineering and sustaining engineering projects.

LOCATION: Wallops Island, Virginia.

 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES: Network engineers at WFF perform the following functions:

·       Support the Network Assessment and Assurance process by providing assessment artifacts and their generation as required, be available to during assessments to field  related questions, facilitate/enhance network security, and provide asset and configuration management data collection.

·       Support diverse technologies on the Range Mission Network during simulations, dess rehearsals and launches.

·       Support engineering and sustaining engineering projects as the network engineering and IT Security representative.

·       Establish networking environment by designing system configuration, directing system installation, and defining, documenting, and enforcing system standards.

·       Develop and maintain network topology, boundary diagrams, and data flow diagrams.

·       Develop and maintain the master list of ports protocols and services in use on the Ring Mesh Network to de-conflict new systems/devices being added to the Wallops range and launch operations environment.

·       Develop and maintain the multicast network supporting extensive video and range endpoints

·       Monitor network performance and ensure system availability and reliability.

·       Maximize network performance, troubleshoot network problems and outages.

·       Secure network systems by implementing security controls and establishing and enforcing policies; defining and monitoring access via Cisco ISE.

·       Report network status by gathering and prioritizing information.

·       Support network related projects.

·       Configure and install various network devices and services (switches, firewalls, VPN, QoS).

·       Perform network maintenance and system upgrades including service packs, patches, hot fixes.

·       Monitor system resource utilization, trending, and capacity planning.

·       Track inventory and life-cycle of network equipment, technology refresh, and software support.

·       Select and implement security tools and procedures as outlined in the system security plans.

·       Liaise with vendors and other IT personnel for problem resolution.

·       Assist with preparing Statement of Work documents and seeking vendor input.

·       Supports acquisition of hardware and software as well as subcontractor services as needed.

·       Work closely with Operations staff to design and implement technical solutions.

·       Lead network testing efforts by preparing plans and procedures, conducting tests, and preparing test reports.

Qualifications:

·       Background with Cisco network switching and routing devices and protocols

·       Cisco CCNP certification

·       Solarwinds experience

·       Cisco ISE experience

·       Firewall experience

·       Fluency with TCP/UDP protocol layers

·       Must maintain a valid passport

·       Active/current security clearance or eligibility to obtain security clearance

Other Preferred Capabilities:

·       Ability to work independently with a minimum of supervision.

·       Ability to work on assignments that maybe complex in nature and where considerable judgment and initiative are required in implementation and problem resolution.

·       Project coordination & management experience is a plus.

·       Strong communication skills (verbal and written).

Position status:   Full time position open to U.S. Persons only.  Onsite presence – no remote eligibility.

 

EDUCATION: BA/BS degree in a technical discipline (i.e., engineering, information systems, computer science) and min. 10 years of experience. Other degrees combined with years of progressive experience in a related field will be considered.

 

TRAVEL: Travel to domestic and international locations 3 to 4 times a year (duration of 1 to 3 weeks) is anticipated and required for this position.
