How much do nanoparticles jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 8, 2026, the average hourly pay for nanoparticles in the United States is $16.60, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $15.14 and $17.31 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by researchers working with nanoparticles in a laboratory setting?

Researchers working with nanoparticles often encounter challenges related to ensuring consistent particle size and distribution, as even minor variations can impact experiment results or product performance. Additionally, maintaining a contamination-free environment is crucial, since nanoparticles can be highly sensitive to impurities. Collaborating with interdisciplinary teams, such as chemists, materials scientists, and engineers, is common in order to address complex problems and optimize nanoparticle synthesis or application. Safety is also a significant concern due to the unique health risks nanoparticles may pose, so strict adherence to safety protocols is required.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Nanoparticle Scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Nanoparticle Scientist, you need a strong background in chemistry, material science, or a related field, often supported by a relevant degree (PhD or MSc). Familiarity with characterization tools like TEM, SEM, DLS, and experience with laboratory protocols and safety certifications are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong teamwork and communication skills set top candidates apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for advancing research, ensuring accurate results, and fostering innovation in nanotechnology applications.

What is the difference between Nanoparticles vs Nanomaterials?

AspectNanoparticlesNanomaterials
DefinitionTiny particles between 1-100 nanometers in sizeMaterials engineered at the nanoscale, including particles, fibers, or coatings
CredentialsTypically require degrees in chemistry, materials science, or nanotechnologyRequire similar credentials, often with broader focus on materials engineering
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, manufacturing facilities, pharmaceutical or electronics industriesResearch and development, manufacturing, and applied industries
Industry UsageUsed in medicine, electronics, cosmetics, and energy sectorsUsed in composite materials, coatings, sensors, and drug delivery systems

Nanoparticles are specific tiny particles within the broader category of nanomaterials. While nanoparticles focus on individual particles, nanomaterials encompass a wide range of nanoscale materials and structures. Both roles require similar skills and work environments, but nanomaterials often involve more complex material design and application.

What are nanoparticles?

Nanoparticles are tiny particles that measure between 1 and 100 nanometers in size, which is about 100,000 times smaller than the width of a human hair. Due to their small size, nanoparticles often have unique physical and chemical properties, such as increased surface area and reactivity. They are used in a variety of fields, including medicine, electronics, energy, and environmental science. For example, nanoparticles can be used for targeted drug delivery, improving solar panel efficiency, or creating stronger materials. Understanding their behavior and potential risks is a key part of ongoing research.

Research Intern (Downstream Processing) - Onsite Marlborough, MA

Sartorius Stedim Biotech

Marlborough, MA

$30/hr

Full-time

Posted 18 days ago

Job description

We are seeking a motivated and technically skilled intern (PhD level) to support research and development activities in downstream processing of extracellular vesicles (EVs) and viral vectors. The successful candidate will work closely with a multidisciplinary team to optimize and execute purification workflows using tangential flow filtration (TFF) and chromatography-based methods. This internship provides hands-on experience in biologics processing and analytical evaluation, contributing directly to process development for therapeutic nanoparticles.

Onsite at our Marlborough, MA site,

In the Research Intern role, you will serve as a critical contributor to the development and integration of Sartorius' emerging technologies for characterization and purification of different types of nanoparticles such as extracellular vesicles and viral vectors. These leading-edge platforms will be utilized in basic research as well as the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.

What you will accomplish together with us

  • Execute Purification Protocols: Perform purification of EVs and viral vectors using TFF systems (hollow fiber and/or flat sheet) and various chromatography modalities (e.g., ion exchange, size exclusion, affinity).
Optimize Unit Operations: Assist in the design and optimization of downstream steps to improve product yield, purity, and scalability.

System Operation and Maintenance: Operate and maintain TFF and chromatography systems (e.g., AKTA or equivalent), including set-up, cleaning, and troubleshooting.

Sample Handling and Quantification: Prepare and process samples following SOPs. Quantify particles using orthogonal methods such as NTA, qPCR, protein assays, and total RNA analysis.

Process Monitoring and Data Recording: Monitor and document key parameters (e.g., transmembrane pressure, flux, recovery) during TFF runs. Maintain detailed lab notebooks and process logs.

Analytical Support: Support integration of downstream data with analytical assays (e.g., flow cytometry, SEC-MALS, SDS-PAGE) for process characterization.

Collaborative Work: Interact regularly with upstream, analytical, and formulation teams to align on process goals and transfer knowledge.

Safety and Compliance: Follow laboratory safety protocols and ensure compliance with quality standards and experimental reproducibility.

What will convince us

Education:

  • PhD candidate in Bioengineering, or closely related discipline with formal education and experience with extracellular vesicles characterization and purification.

Experience:

  • Hands-on experience with TFF systems (lab or pilot scale) for nanoparticle or biologics concentration and diafiltration.

Practical knowledge of chromatography techniques such as SEC, IEX, or affinity purification.

Familiarity with nanoparticle systems such as EVs, viral vectors (e.g., AAV, lentivirus), or LNPs.

Comfortable working in a wet lab environment with complex biological samples.

Strong documentation and organizational skills; experience with SOPs and batch records is a plus.

Experience with analytical tools (e.g., NTA, BCA, qPCR, HPLC, or SEC-MALS) is highly desirable

  • Identification with our core values: Sustainability, Openness, Enjoyment

Compensation is up to $30 hr.
