What is a mystery audit?

A Mystery Audit job involves secretly evaluating a business’s customer service, product quality, or compliance with company standards. Mystery auditors, also known as mystery shoppers, visit stores, restaurants, or service centers acting as regular customers while assessing various aspects. They then provide detailed feedback based on predetermined criteria. These audits help businesses improve their operations and customer experience.

What does a mystery auditor do?

A typical day for a Mystery Auditor involves visiting assigned locations—such as stores, restaurants, or service providers—to evaluate customer service, cleanliness, product availability, and compliance with company policies, all while posing as a regular customer. Auditors meticulously document their observations using evaluation forms or specialized mobile apps, often submitting detailed reports by the end of the day. The nature of the job may require frequent travel and flexibility in scheduling, as audits often need to be conducted at different times and locations. Mystery Auditors usually work independently but may communicate closely with quality assurance teams or project managers to ensure audit standards are met and feedback is actionable.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the mystery audit position, and why are they important?

To excel as a Mystery Auditor, strong observational skills, attention to detail, and analytical abilities are essential, typically backed by experience in retail, hospitality, or compliance auditing. Familiarity with audit reporting tools, data collection apps, and sometimes industry-specific certifications can enhance your effectiveness. Discretion, adaptability, and excellent written communication are important soft skills that set top performers apart. These competencies ensure objective, accurate assessments while maintaining confidentiality and building trust with clients.

Job description

Overview

About Boyne Resorts

Boyne Resorts is a privately held, family-owned ski company with a 75-year legacy of creating transformative outdoor lifestyle experiences across North America. As a “company of resorts” rather than a “resort company,” we honor the unique identity of each property while sharing a commitment to excellence and to serving our people, our guests, and our communities first.

Our shared culture is built on the L.E.A.D.S. values: Long-Term Thinking, Excellence in Execution, Attitude is Everything, Develop Great People, and Serve First.

Position Summary

The Senior Vice President of Lodging & Brand Standards is a newly integrated position that unites full operational leadership of Boyne Resorts' portfolio of hotels, with direct ownership of brand standards compliance and quality assurance across every property. This position oversees the operational, financial, and guest experience performance of multiple hotels and spas while personally directing the audit function that protects brand integrity, consistency, and reputation across the portfolio. The SVP guides divisional leadership on operations, including HOAs, budgeting, and strategic goals, and simultaneously leads a structured program of on-site inspections, mystery audits, and corrective action planning to ensure every property meets Boyne Resorts' operational and service standards.

Responsibilities

What You'll Do

Hotel Operations Leadership

  • Partner with divisional leaders overseeing lodging, spas & hospitality to manage performance, service delivery, and cost controls across the portfolio
  • Review financial and operational results with General Managers and divisional leaders to drive revenue growth, guest satisfaction, and continuous improvement
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and revenue management strategy for each property
  • Oversee risk management, labor controls, and competitive positioning across the portfolio

Brand Standards & Quality Assurance

  • Design and lead a structured program of on-site inspections and mystery audits measuring compliance with Boyne’s operational and service standards
  • Evaluate property maintenance, cleanliness, safety, and guest-facing service quality, and oversee accurate scoring and reporting
  • Present executive-level audit findings and partner with GMs, COOs, and department heads to build and close corrective action plans
  • Maintain auditor independence and consistent standards portfolio-wide, elevating recurring gaps to C-level leadership

Owners' Services

  • Set system-wide HOA strategy, policies, and service levels, and build a standards playbook covering financial reporting, reserves, and communications
  • Extend the brand-standards audit approach to owner services and standardize owner communications
    • Serve as the escalation point for GMs and COOs on HOA governance matters, and track regulatory compliance across the states Boyne operates in

Qualifications

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management, Business Administration, or a related field
  • 10+ years of executive-level hotel operations experience with multi-property responsibility; brand standards, quality assurance, or audit experience strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with mystery-audit methodology and structured property inspection programs
  • Strong financial acumen, including budgeting, forecasting, and the ability to interpret financial and audit reports
  • Excellent communication and conflict-management skills, with the executive presence to deliver constructive feedback to senior leaders and ownership groups
  • A track record of developing talent and leading change across decentralized, multi-property organizations

Work Environment & Travel

  • Regular travel to properties for operational oversight, plus additional unannounced travel for audits — typically 50–80%, depending on portfolio size
  • Some travel involves outdoor conditions and uneven or slippery surfaces; role requires the ability to sit for extended periods and occasionally lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays, as required

Job Benefits

This position is regular full-time and eligible for:

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance programs
  • Flexible spending account programs
  • Life insurance programs
  • Paid time off and paid leave programs
  • 401(k) savings plan
  • Employee ski pass and dependent ski passes
  • Other company perks

Equal Opportunity

Boyne Resorts is an equal opportunity employer (Minority/Female/Disabled/Veteran) and participates in E-Verify.
