What is a Myofunctional Therapy job?

A Myofunctional Therapy job involves working with patients to improve oral and facial muscle function. Therapists help treat issues like tongue thrust, mouth breathing, and improper swallowing patterns. They often collaborate with dentists, orthodontists, and speech therapists to address conditions related to breathing, speech, and dental health. Treatment typically includes exercises to strengthen and retrain the muscles of the tongue, lips, and face for optimal function.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Myofunctional Therapy position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Myofunctional Therapy, you need a solid understanding of orofacial anatomy, clinical assessment skills, and often a degree or certification in dental hygiene, speech-language pathology, or a related health field. Familiarity with diagnostic tools, treatment planning software, and certification from organizations such as the International Association of Orofacial Myology (IAOM) are typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, patience, and the ability to motivate and educate patients are crucial soft skills. These competencies ensure effective assessment, therapy planning, and patient adherence for improved oral and facial function.

What does a typical workday look like for a myofunctional therapist?

A typical workday for a myofunctional therapist involves evaluating patients for orofacial muscle dysfunction, developing customized therapy plans, and conducting one-on-one treatment sessions focused on exercises and behavior modification. You may work independently or as part of a team that includes dentists, orthodontists, and speech-language pathologists, collaborating to monitor progress and adjust care. Documentation of patient progress, educating clients and sometimes their families, and maintaining continuous professional development are also important daily responsibilities. Most therapists work in private clinics, dental practices, or multidisciplinary healthcare settings. This variety keeps each day dynamic and allows you to make a significant impact on patients' quality of life.
