What does a music department intern do?

A Music Department Intern assists with the daily operations of a music department, which may be part of a school, production company, or record label. Typical responsibilities include organizing sheet music, helping with rehearsals, supporting faculty or staff, and managing administrative tasks like scheduling or arranging equipment. Interns may also gain hands-on experience in music production, event planning, and marketing. This role is designed to provide valuable insight into the music industry and help interns develop professional skills.

What types of projects and tasks can a music department intern expect to work on throughout their internship?

As a Music Department Intern, you can expect to assist with a variety of projects such as organizing music libraries, supporting rehearsals, coordinating schedules, and helping with the logistics of concerts or events. Interns often have opportunities to observe meetings, participate in administrative tasks, and collaborate closely with music directors, faculty, and student musicians. This hands-on experience provides a well-rounded understanding of how music departments operate and offers valuable exposure to both the creative and operational sides of the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a music department intern, and why are they important?

Job description

Music Business Program Booking & Entertainment Internship

The Classic Center & Akins Ford Arena | Athens, Georgia

The Booking & Entertainment Internship at The Classic Center is a paid, hands-on opportunity for a student interested in learning how concerts, comedy, family entertainment, performing arts, sports, and other live events make their way from an idea to the stage.

Working directly with the Director of Booking & Entertainment, the intern will gain practical exposure to the business behind live entertainment at The Classic Center Theatre and Akins Ford Arena.

This is not designed to be an observational internship. The intern will contribute to real projects, research, systems, and departmental responsibilities while learning how a professional venue evaluates and develops entertainment opportunities.

During the semester, you may have the opportunity to:

  • Research artists, tours, and entertainment trends and help identify potential opportunities for the Athens market.
  • Learn the venue booking process, including booking calendars, holds, market conflicts, contracts, and systems such as PRISM and Momentus.
  • Explore the business side of live entertainment by working with historical ticket sales, show settlements, expenses, ancillary revenue, and event-performance information.
  • Support industry relationship management involving agents, promoters, artists, and other entertainment partners.
  • Assist with booking CRM and industry research, including artist targets, agency and promoter representation, touring activity, and market intelligence.
  • See how Booking works with Marketing, Ticketing, Finance, and Operations to move an event from opportunity to execution.
  • Gain exposure to live events and client hospitality and see how industry relationships move from emails, calls, and negotiations into the venue environment.

The ideal candidate is dependable, organized, detail-oriented, comfortable with spreadsheets and research, a strong professional communicator, willing to take initiative, and able to handle confidential business information with maturity and discretion.

Requirement: Students must receive academic credit for this internship through UGA's Music Business Program

Term: One academic semester
Minimum Commitment: 4 hours per week, with additional hours available
Work Arrangement: Flexible and hybrid
Location: The Classic Center & Akins Ford Arena - Athens, Georgia
Potential Next Step: Strong performers may be invited to continue for a second semester with expanded responsibilities.

The candidate who is selected for this position will have to successfully pass a drug screening and a criminal background check.
