POSITION DESCRIPTION


The Senior Director of Marketing and Communication (SDMC) is responsible for building and managing brand identity and raising brand awareness of the organization and its programs both nationally and globally. The SDMC oversees all aspects of the King Center's marketing, branding and communications efforts. The SDMC is responsible for the development and implementation of systems and processes that create consistency and efficiencies for the overall brand, marketing initiatives, media relations, social media, public relations and the King Center's programs. The Senior Director of Marketing and Communications must have a passion for social justice globally. The SDMC reports to the CEO (until the onboarding of the COO) and plays an active role in long-term strategic visioning.


Position Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for identifying new market space for TKC by analyzing trends and market disruptions and searching for emerging opportunities to advance Nonviolence365 and the Beloved Community.
  • Oversees team responsible for the development and execution of integrated marketing and communication plans that ensure multichannel engagement and alignment in support of brand and revenue objectives.
  • Sets and achieves measurable marketing and communications goals/objectives and ensures that evaluation systems are in place to monitor performance; report progress to leadership; and adjust future plans and tactics as needed.
  • Day to day supervision, coaching and mentorship of mar/com staff and contractors to achieve maximum effectiveness
  • Develop in-depth understanding of program owners' priorities - informed by interviews with key stakeholders, review of business plans and audit of research/industry insight, etc. - to propose the most effective messaging and positioning for driving business and marketing objectives.
  • Integrate innovative solutions and concepts including technology to improve end user and guest experience related to Mrs. Coretta Scott King's leadership and Dr. King's leadership of the modern-day civil rights movement.
  • Proactively identify marketing and communications opportunities, challenges, and emerging issues facing the organization.
  • Collaborate in the development of a membership network structure that includes benefits appropriate to level of contribution
  • Oversees website content, website development and social media strategy for the organization
  • Communicates regularly with leadership and staff to lead, develop and execute appropriate organizational messaging and content, strategies, messages, branding, advertising and other constituent communications, collateral and promotional materials, including website, newsletter, and other constituent communications, collateral, and promotional materials.
  • Responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of a marketing strategy to increase sales to include a redesign of online bookstore.
  • Responsible for developing innovative ways to market The King Center's signature programs and brand Nonviolence365 / NV365
  • Work closely with teams to continuously gather market intelligence and feedback on the effectiveness of product marketing materials, trainings, content, and promotions.
  • Responsible for developing a cause marketing campaign to monetize The King Holiday.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of a comprehensive marketing plan that includes signature events and programs (e.g. Salute to Greatness, King Holiday, Nonviolence365 Training, Beloved Community Schools, Beloved Community Talks, Students With King, etc...) media relations, press releases, social networking, Annual Report, website, newsletters, and branding.
  • Responsible for growing brand awareness and strengthening organization's reputation with stakeholders and the global community.
  • Make presentations to the Board on marketing and communications strategies and activities.
  • Lead brainstorming and innovative strategy sessions with senior executives and leadership to discover new solutions for the purpose of monetizing Nonviolence365 Initiatives and Archives without compromising programmatic integrity and achievement of program objectives.
  • Develop a socially impactful brand that is premier in the area of Beloved Community, Nonviolence, Conflict resolution/reconciliation, Social justice mobilizing & organizing, Equity & Inclusion, Love leadership.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated success leading a marketing or communications turnaround in a nonprofit, museum, cultural institution, or mission-driven organization.
  • Proven ability to translate mission and programming into compelling campaigns that increase audience engagement, earned media, and contributed revenue.
  • Experience assessing and rebuilding brand, messaging, and channel strategy during periods of organizational change or underperformance.
  • Demonstrate understanding mass communication laws as it relates to intellectual property and news
  • Strong entrepreneurial skills with excellent business judgment, problem solving abilities and general management strengths
  • Proven, excellent communication skills - written and verbal; strong interpersonal skills - and the ability to communicate complex ideas in both technical and user-friendly language
  • Experience with the full spectrum of the creative process, including brand strategy, storytelling, user research, multimedia assets, and design for all platforms from print to digital
  • Must have a working knowledge of Dr. and Mrs. King's leadership and life's work including their vision of the Beloved Community as well as a strong commitment to social impact
  • Demonstrated experience in managing a multi-faceted strategic marketing and communications, media relations, and marketing program to advance an organization's mission and goals.
  • Energetic, creative, flexible, and innovative thinker, with a knack for simplifying complicated or technical concepts.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team, and to routinely manage multiple priorities. Must enjoy working in a highly creative, collaborative, fast-paced, and professional environment, with emphasis on excellence and teamwork
  • A strong track record of positioning an organization to achieve tangible outcomes in a competitive communications environment.
  • Strong understanding of digital marketing SEO/SEM initiatives including optimizing websites, developing landing pages, leveraging digital and social advertising, and email campaigns.
  • Must have be able to work flexible hours including weekends and 24 hour availability during any crisis or critical national and/or global events.
  • Solid knowledge of Adobe CC software, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign etc. preferred
  • Willingness to travel (Nationally and Internationally) up to 25% of the time
