Position Summary

The Associate Director of Marketing Communications for Engineering and Health Sciences works with multiple teams to develop and execute communications and marketing tactics to showcase the learning, accomplishments, teaching, scholarship, service, innovation, and leadership of the Elon University community. This position has responsibility for the creation of messaging and communications collateral that advances the overall reputation of both schools while providing support additional teams directly focused on admissions. The associate director reports to the Assistant Vice President for Strategic Communications and Media Relations with dotted line reports to the deans of both schools. The person in this position maintains offices at both the Francis Center and within the dean's suite in the School of Engineering and Computing.

Minimum Required Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or related field. Ability to write in Associated Press style for multiple audiences and experience creating multimedia content and managing institutional social media accounts. Preferred experience working with the WordPress content management system.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Exceptional written communication skills and demonstrated ability to plan and produce compelling communications materials across multiple platforms, including print, web, and social media. Must be able to communicate effectively with diverse students, faculty, staff, and the community. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with target audiences, colleagues, and the public. Maintain a professional demeanor and maintain confidentiality. Able to adjust to changing priorities as a team player. Hold high standards regarding accuracy and attention to detail. Use good judgment to make appropriate decisions. Provide technical support when appropriate.
All responsibilities to be divided evenly between both schools.

Job Duties

  • Writing & Editing
    • Interview story subjects related to the School of Health Sciences and the School of Engineering and Computing, write and publish stories for Elon University digital and print publications, assist student workers with the editing of their own story assignments for communication and marketing needs, and provide communications support as needed to development officers assigned/embedded within the School of Health Sciences and the School of Engineering and Computing.
  • Website and Social Media Management:
    • Regularly review and update website content for departments, programs, centers, and initiatives managed by the School of Health Sciences and the School of Engineering and Computing; manage social media accounts for both schools and provide guidance to school partners on best practices and appropriate use of social media accounts.
  • Design
    • Work with University Communications to design templates for print materials, emails, and digital signage used by campus partners in the School of Health Sciences and the School of Engineering and Computing, for communication and marketing needs.
  • Multimedia Production
    • Create photos for print materials and online articles, and collect video content for social media, to help publicize feature stories and social content that showcases achievements with the School of Health Sciences and the School of Engineering and Computing communities.
  • Leadership Support
    • As a strategic partner with the divisions' administrative teams attend leadership meetings and assist the dean and executive teams of both the School of Health Sciences and the School of Engineering and Computing, with communication needs relevant to key stakeholders, including high-level presentations for university leadership (Board of Trustees, Parents Council, etc.)
  • Marketing
    • Strategize with the deans of the School of Health Sciences and the School of Engineering and Computing, as well as department chairs, on effective use of sponsorships and conference/symposium program marketing to showcase faculty achievements to academic audiences; assist with the promotion of programs and events sponsored by departments within the schools; provide guidance and help ensure compliance on the appropriate use of the Elon University brand.
