What Are the Duties of an MRB Engineer?

A material review board (MRB) engineer performs duties related to the complex engineering problems of aerospace design and development. As an MRB engineer, your responsibilities include reviewing and resolving defects and nonconforming conditions in assemblies, documenting and determining if abnormalities are related to engineering issues, and ensuring corrections will not negatively affect the functionality of systems. You also verify that materials are structurally adequate for their purpose in the assembly, monitor installation of those materials, and help implement any changes as needed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an MRB Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an MRB Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or aerospace engineering, strong analytical skills, and experience with manufacturing processes, typically supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with CAD software, PLM systems, and industry standards, along with knowledge of root cause analysis tools, is commonly required. Exceptional problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and making critical decisions. These skills ensure that non-conforming products are evaluated, corrected, and documented efficiently, maintaining quality and safety standards in manufacturing environments.

What are some common challenges faced by MRB Engineers and how can they be addressed?

MRB Engineers often encounter the challenge of quickly assessing and resolving non-conformances in manufacturing while ensuring compliance with strict safety and quality standards. Balancing tight production schedules with thorough root-cause analysis can be demanding. Effective communication with cross-functional teams, such as design, manufacturing, and quality assurance, is crucial for timely and accurate dispositions. Developing strong problem-solving skills and staying updated on regulatory requirements can help MRB Engineers navigate these challenges successfully.

What are MRB Engineers?

MRB Engineers, or Material Review Board Engineers, are professionals responsible for evaluating and resolving nonconformities in manufacturing, particularly within the aerospace and automotive industries. They assess parts or assemblies that do not meet specifications, determine the root cause, and decide whether to accept, rework, or reject the item. Their role ensures that only safe, high-quality products proceed through production, balancing engineering standards, safety requirements, and efficiency. MRB Engineers often collaborate with design, quality, and production teams to implement corrective actions and prevent future issues.

What jobs make $3,000 a month without a degree?

For a Mrb Engineer or similar technical roles, earning $3,000 a month without a degree typically requires experience, certifications, or specialized skills in areas like network management, cybersecurity, or systems administration. Many such jobs are found in IT support, technical troubleshooting, or freelance consulting, often requiring hands-on expertise and industry certifications rather than formal degrees.

What is the difference between Mrb Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectMrb EngineerMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering or related field, certifications like ASMEBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, PE license (optional)
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, industrial facilities, maintenance sitesDesign offices, manufacturing plants, R&D labs
Industry UsageHeavy industry, manufacturing, maintenanceProduct design, development, testing

The Mrb Engineer and Mechanical Engineer roles share similar educational backgrounds and certifications. However, Mrb Engineers typically focus more on maintenance, troubleshooting, and operational support in industrial settings, while Mechanical Engineers are more involved in design and development. Both roles are essential in manufacturing industries, but their daily tasks and focus areas differ.

Company Overview

Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. At Joby, we've been working to make that dream a reality since 2009 and we're now in the final stages of certifying our aircraft with the FAA. With plans to launch our aircraft in the US and Dubai, we're now scaling manufacturing and preparing for the launch of our commercial service.

Overview

This role is a key position as the company quickly moved towards FAA type and production certifications. The applicant is expected to have a strong understanding of aerospace engineering principles, excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams. The individual will be responsible for dispositioning non-conformances and ensuring that all materials and components meet airworthiness requirements while working collaboratively with cross-functional teams. Attention to detail is critical and the engineer will have experience analyzing aircraft structures, supporting aircraft builds, and both composite and metallic repairs. Prior experience in an aircraft manufacturing environment or support role is a must as you will play a key role in the scale up of Joby's high volume aircraft production line.

Responsibilities
  • Select appropriate methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria to resolve complex engineering issues
  • Write robust dispositions with clear requirements to restore airworthiness
  • Produce structural substantiation reports in support of NCR disposition
  • Monitor trends of  recurring discrepancies and support root cause corrective action initiatives
  • Directly communicate with quality, inspection, manufacturing engineers, and M&P
Required
  • B.S. in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or another relevant discipline
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience within an aircraft manufacturing or repair depot facility
  • Experience with CATIA V5/V6 or similar CAD program
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Highly proactive attitude with the ability to manage multiple assignments
  • Ability to travel domestically (25% or less if required)
Desired
  • M.S. in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or another relevant discipline
  • Prior MRB experience and independent MRB approval authority
  • Experience developing and designing aircraft structural repairs and calculating basic static stress analysis in support of the repair disposition and/or repair drawing on both metallic and composite
  • In-depth understanding of loading scenarios, free body diagrams, and structural behavior of aircraft components
  • Working knowledge of Polyworks and Femap/Nastran
  • Experience with composite laminate fastened and bonded structure
  • Hands on experience working within aircraft certification program
  • Excellent understanding of FAR Part 23 and 27 regulations
