What is a contractual MRB engineer?

Contractual MRB Engineers are professionals hired on a contract basis to work in the Material Review Board (MRB) of manufacturing or engineering organizations. Their primary role is to assess, analyze, and determine the disposition of nonconforming parts or materials, ensuring they meet safety and quality standards. These engineers collaborate with design, quality, and production teams to resolve issues efficiently. Working on a contractual basis allows companies to address temporary increases in workload or specialized projects. MRB Engineers play a key role in maintaining product integrity and compliance with industry regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contractual MRB engineer?

To thrive as a Contractual MRB (Material Review Board) Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or aerospace engineering, experience in manufacturing or quality assurance, and typically a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with industry-specific tools such as CAD software, PLM systems, and knowledge of regulatory standards like AS9100 are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, decision-making, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and resolve non-conformances efficiently. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring product quality, regulatory compliance, and timely resolution of engineering issues in high-stakes environments.

What are the primary challenges faced by a contractual MRB engineer, and how can they be addressed?

A key challenge for Contractual MRB (Material Review Board) Engineers is quickly adapting to new organizational processes and product lines, as contracts may vary in duration and scope. Rapidly understanding company-specific documentation, quality standards, and decision-making protocols is essential. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—such as design, manufacturing, and quality assurance—is frequent, requiring strong communication skills to resolve nonconformances efficiently. To address these challenges, it's important to proactively seek onboarding resources, clarify expectations with supervisors, and build relationships with team members early in the contract period.

Job description

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced MRB Engineer to support commercial aircraft production by evaluating nonconforming hardware and developing engineering repair dispositions in accordance with Boeing engineering, quality, and regulatory requirements.

The ideal candidate will have experience supporting Boeing commercial aircraft programs as an MRB Engineer, Liaison Engineer, Production Support Engineer, or Stress Engineer. Candidates with current or previous Boeing MRB Delegation (Stamping Authority) are highly preferred; however, engineers who have developed repair dispositions and engineering instructions for approval by a delegated Boeing MRB Engineer are also encouraged to apply. We are looking for professionals who have demonstrated technical expertise, a collaborative approach to solving production issues, and a stable history of supporting complex aerospace manufacturing environments

.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate nonconforming aircraft parts, assemblies, and installations in support of production.
  • Develop engineering repair dispositions and rework instructions for structural and manufacturing nonconformances.
  • Prepare technical repair documentation for review and approval by a delegated Boeing MRB Engineer when required.
  • If delegated, review and approve MRB dispositions in accordance with Boeing engineering requirements and procedures.
  • Determine appropriate dispositions including Use As Is, Repair, Rework, and other approved corrective actions.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, specifications, stress reports, and manufacturing documentation to develop technically sound repair solutions.
  • Verify compliance with Boeing engineering requirements, customer contractual obligations, quality management systems, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Support supplier-related nonconformances involving fabricated components, brackets, assemblies, and structural hardware.
  • Partner with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Supplier Quality, and Production teams to resolve technical issues while minimizing production disruptions.
  • Maintain accurate MRB documentation and ensure quality notifications are processed in a timely manner.
  • Monitor MRB inventory, documentation, and quality records to ensure compliance with established procedures and prevent aging of nonconformance records.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on production efficiency, quality, and process compliance.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline (or equivalent aerospace engineering experience).
  • Minimum 5 years of aerospace engineering experience supporting Boeing commercial aircraft programs.
  • Experience developing MRB repair dispositions, engineering repairs, or rework instructions for aircraft nonconformances.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, stress reports, and manufacturing documentation.
  • Strong understanding of aircraft structural repair methods, manufacturing processes, and engineering disposition practices.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced production or manufacturing support environment.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with cross-functional Engineering, Manufacturing, and Quality organizations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current or previous Boeing MRB Delegation (Stamping Authority).
  • Experience preparing repair dispositions for review and approval by a delegated Boeing MRB Engineer.
  • Boeing program experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience supporting Liaison Engineering, MRB, Production Support, or Stress Engineering organizations.
  • Experience with metallic and/or composite aircraft structures.
  • Familiarity with Boeing engineering systems, specifications, and production processes.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The successful candidate has demonstrated long-term success supporting Boeing commercial aircraft programs in an MRB, Liaison, Production Support, or Stress Engineering capacity. They possess strong technical judgment, collaborate effectively across multiple disciplines, and consistently deliver high-quality engineering solutions in a production environment. Candidates with a stable employment history and a proven track record of supporting aerospace manufacturing programs through multiple phases of production are highly preferred.
