As of Aug 23, 2026, the average hourly pay for mrb engineer in California is $55.26, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $39.62 and $73.56 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is an MRB engineer?

MRB Engineers, or Material Review Board Engineers, are professionals responsible for evaluating and resolving nonconformities in manufacturing, particularly within the aerospace and automotive industries. They assess parts or assemblies that do not meet specifications, determine the root cause, and decide whether to accept, rework, or reject the item. Their role ensures that only safe, high-quality products proceed through production, balancing engineering standards, safety requirements, and efficiency. MRB Engineers often collaborate with design, quality, and production teams to implement corrective actions and prevent future issues.

What are the duties of an MRB engineer?

A material review board (MRB) engineer performs duties related to the complex engineering problems of aerospace design and development. As an MRB engineer, your responsibilities include reviewing and resolving defects and nonconforming conditions in assemblies, documenting and determining if abnormalities are related to engineering issues, and ensuring corrections will not negatively affect the functionality of systems. You also verify that materials are structurally adequate for their purpose in the assembly, monitor installation of those materials, and help implement any changes as needed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an MRB engineer?

To thrive as an MRB Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or aerospace engineering, strong analytical skills, and experience with manufacturing processes, typically supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with CAD software, PLM systems, and industry standards, along with knowledge of root cause analysis tools, is commonly required. Exceptional problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and making critical decisions. These skills ensure that non-conforming products are evaluated, corrected, and documented efficiently, maintaining quality and safety standards in manufacturing environments.

What are some common challenges faced by MRB engineers and how can they be addressed?

MRB Engineers often encounter the challenge of quickly assessing and resolving non-conformances in manufacturing while ensuring compliance with strict safety and quality standards. Balancing tight production schedules with thorough root-cause analysis can be demanding. Effective communication with cross-functional teams, such as design, manufacturing, and quality assurance, is crucial for timely and accurate dispositions. Developing strong problem-solving skills and staying updated on regulatory requirements can help MRB Engineers navigate these challenges successfully.

What is the difference between Mrb Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectMrb EngineerMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering or related field, certifications like ASMEBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, PE license (optional)
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, industrial facilities, maintenance sitesDesign offices, manufacturing plants, R&D labs
Industry UsageHeavy industry, manufacturing, maintenanceProduct design, development, testing

The Mrb Engineer and Mechanical Engineer roles share similar educational backgrounds and certifications. However, Mrb Engineers typically focus more on maintenance, troubleshooting, and operational support in industrial settings, while Mechanical Engineers are more involved in design and development. Both roles are essential in manufacturing industries, but their daily tasks and focus areas differ.

What does a Mrb engineer do?

A Mrb engineer designs, develops, and maintains mechanical, robotic, or manufacturing systems, often working with automation tools and CAD software. They analyze system performance, troubleshoot issues, and ensure safety and efficiency in production environments.

Job description

About the Role

This is a seed-stage, Y Combinator-backed insurtech startup building AI agents that handle real operational work inside insurance agencies. As the first US Forward Deployed Engineer, you'll own customer deployments end to end — from uncovering messy, undocumented workflows to shipping production AI agents that run live inside agency operating systems.

This role sits at the intersection of engineering, product, and customer success. You'll be the person who discovers what an agency truly needs, builds the solution, gets it live, and makes sure it sticks. You'll work directly with agency owners and ops leads, and will travel to customer sites regularly.

This is an on-site role based in San Francisco, CA. US citizenship is required. No visa sponsorship is available.

What You'll Do
  • Own customer deployments from initial scoping through go-live, working directly with agency owners and operations leads to deeply understand how they work.

  • Build integrations into the systems agencies already use — whether they have clean APIs, outdated docs, or no documentation at all.

  • Extract tribal knowledge from agency owners, senior staff, and producers, then translate it into system designs and ship them.

  • Diagnose and resolve customer issues directly, shipping quick fixes and small customizations that make AI agents fit each agency's workflows.

  • Maintain a tight cadence with customers to surface expansion opportunities and spot patterns across deployments.

  • Identify failure patterns across accounts and feed fixes back into the core platform so the same problem doesn't get solved twice.

  • Travel to customer sites to ensure successful deployments and adoption.

What We're Looking For

Must-haves (dealbreakers):

  • 2+ years shipping production code in Python.

  • At least one AI application deployed to real production users, with experience designing and iterating evals for real-world performance.

  • Proficiency with APIs, system integrations, and working across multiple interconnected systems.

  • US citizenship (no visa sponsorship available).

Required skills & experience:

  • Hands-on experience with LLMs, prompt engineering, and AI agent development.

  • Experience with voice or telephony stacks (Twilio or similar).

  • Proven ability to reverse-engineer undocumented systems, work with incomplete documentation, and integrate with legacy or poorly-documented APIs.

  • Track record of owning projects end to end — from discovery through production deployment and user adoption.

  • Experience working at an early-stage startup or taking full ownership of ambiguous projects without an established playbook.

  • Ability to translate domain-specific tribal knowledge and unwritten workflows into concrete technical system designs.

  • Strong communication skills — comfortable translating between technical and non-technical stakeholders without losing clarity.

  • Willingness to travel to customer sites.

Nice to have:

  • Experience fine-tuning models or building custom AI evaluations.

  • Experience with speech-to-text systems (e.g. Whisper API).

  • Domain knowledge in insurance, financial services, or B2B SaaS operations.

  • Experience building reusable connectors, configuration layers, or platform abstractions for multi-customer deployments.

Compensation & Benefits
  • Salary: $110,000 – $180,000 per year, depending on experience.

  • Early-stage equity opportunity at a well-funded seed-stage company.

Location
  • On-site in San Francisco, CA.

  • Regular travel to customer sites required.

  • US citizenship required; no visa sponsorship available.
