Job description

Job Title: Summer Research Associate

Department: Summer Research Institute (SuRI)

Supervisor: Joanne D Altman, PhD

Pay: Fixed Stipend

Length of Time: Summer Only (June-July 2026)

Program Description: The Summer Research Instituteis a program that invites collaborative work between undergraduate students and faculty mentors from across the university to perform summer research or creative work. Students who meet the criteria for it receive free campus housing for program duration, meals, and a summer stipend. This student-centered research program focuses on the development of critical scholarly or creative skills relevant to a specific field as well as broad skills in professional development.

Job Description: This program was open to all HPU undergraduate students. Students were provided with specific instructions on how to complete the application process that closed March 1. Following a competitive application cycle, 19 students were accepted into the program. This job description is provided as a means for students who were selected for inclusion in this program to complete their compensation paperwork through the HPU Business Office. The SuRI program officially runs in concert with the summer class schedule of June and July. You may only apply for this position only if you have completed your contract with SuRI.

Job Location/ Hours Required: The candidate will perform most/all job duties on the High Point University campus or as designated by their research mentor. Hours may vary depending on the job requirements; however, this position requires at least 20 hours of contact time per week. The candidate is also required to attend the weekly Thursday meeting as well as the weekly movie night on Tuesdays.

Responsibilities:

  • As designated by your research mentor
  • Attend weekly meeting and weekly movie
  • Participate in the Elevator Pitch Speed Dating Style culminating event.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be able to attend ALL mandatory meetings
  • Be in good standing with the university
  • Must have the full support of one's mentor
  • Must have been officially accepted into the program
