What does a Motor Design Engineer do?

A Motor Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and testing electric motors used in various applications such as automotive, industrial machinery, appliances, and more. They work with teams to create efficient, reliable, and cost-effective motor solutions by using specialized software and engineering principles. Their tasks often include selecting materials, optimizing motor performance, and ensuring that designs meet safety and regulatory standards. Additionally, they may collaborate with manufacturing teams to troubleshoot and improve production processes.

What is the difference between Motor Design Engineer vs Electrical Design Engineer?

AspectMotor Design EngineerElectrical Design Engineer
Primary FocusDesigning and developing electric motors and related componentsDesigning electrical systems, circuits, and components for various applications
Required SkillsElectromechanical knowledge, motor theory, CAD tools for motor designElectrical circuit design, simulation, and system integration
Work EnvironmentR&D labs, manufacturing facilities, automotive or industrial sectorsElectronics firms, automation, power systems, and industrial sectors

Motor Design Engineers focus on creating and optimizing electric motors, while Electrical Design Engineers work on broader electrical systems and circuits. Both roles require electrical knowledge but differ in their specific applications and design scope.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Motor Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Motor Design Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical or mechanical engineering, with expertise in electromagnetics, motor theory, and CAD-based design, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with simulation tools such as ANSYS Maxwell, MATLAB/Simulink, and experience with prototyping and testing equipment are highly valuable. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and address complex design challenges. These skills and qualities are crucial for creating efficient, innovative motor solutions that meet performance, safety, and cost requirements.

What are some common challenges Motor Design Engineers face when balancing performance requirements with cost constraints?

Motor Design Engineers often encounter the challenge of optimizing motor performance while adhering to strict cost and manufacturability limits. This involves selecting appropriate materials, designing for efficiency, and ensuring the final product meets safety and regulatory standards. Collaborating closely with manufacturing, procurement, and quality assurance teams is key to finding innovative solutions that balance technical specifications with budgetary constraints. Successfully navigating these trade-offs is essential for delivering a competitive and reliable motor product.

Job description

What You'll Do

The Mechanical Design Engineer creates and maintains high-quality CAD models, assemblies, and drawing packs for motor components and related hardware. They define interfaces, tolerances, fits, and manufacturing requirements in a way that enables precision builds and efficient supplier execution. The role combines detail-oriented documentation ownership with practical design-for-manufacture judgment across machining, assembly, and scaling.

A Day in the Life

This role works closely with motor design, test and validation, manufacturing, CNC suppliers, quality, and production teams. They collaborate across prototype and factory environments to improve manufacturability, drawing clarity, inspection readiness, and revision control discipline.

What Youโ€™ll Do

ยท Own CAD models, assemblies, drawings, revisions, and release processes for motor hardware.

ยท Create high-quality 2D manufacturing drawings with complete GD&T, datums, and inspection requirements.

ยท Apply strong design-for-manufacture principles for machining, assembly, and production scale-up.

ยท Manage tolerance stack-ups and critical fits including bearings, shafts, press and slip fits, and fastener interfaces.

ยท Define metal-to-metal interactions with consideration for wear, corrosion, thermal expansion, and service life.

ยท Work with production and CNC suppliers to improve manufacturability and drawing clarity.

ยท Maintain drawing standards, revision control, and documentation quality across hardware releases.

ยท Support rapid iteration during prototype builds without compromising documentation integrity.

What Youโ€™ll Bring

ยท Strong CAD skills with 3+ years industry experience managing assemblies and drawing packs using SolidWorks, Inventor, Fusion 360, Onshape, or similar CAD packages

ยท Proven ability to produce high-quality 2D manufacturing drawings with GD&T.

ยท Solid design-for-manufacture background, ideally with machining exposure.

ยท Strong understanding of tolerance stack-ups, fits, and precision interfaces.

ยท Practical knowledge of materials and metal interactions in real hardware.

ยท High attention to detail in precision manufacturing environments.

Nice to Have

ยท Mechanical FEA experience, including structural or thermal analysis.

ยท Experience with motors, rotating machinery, or tight-tolerance components.

ยท Familiarity with metrology and inspection methods for precision parts.

ยท Exposure to product lifecycle management, release workflows, or configuration control systems.

Benefits

  • Competitive Salary Ranges
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • PTO and paid holidays
