What does a Motor Design Engineer do?

A Motor Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and testing electric motors used in various applications such as automotive, industrial machinery, appliances, and more. They work with teams to create efficient, reliable, and cost-effective motor solutions by using specialized software and engineering principles. Their tasks often include selecting materials, optimizing motor performance, and ensuring that designs meet safety and regulatory standards. Additionally, they may collaborate with manufacturing teams to troubleshoot and improve production processes.

What is the difference between Motor Design Engineer vs Electrical Design Engineer?

AspectMotor Design EngineerElectrical Design Engineer
Primary FocusDesigning and developing electric motors and related componentsDesigning electrical systems, circuits, and components for various applications
Required SkillsElectromechanical knowledge, motor theory, CAD tools for motor designElectrical circuit design, simulation, and system integration
Work EnvironmentR&D labs, manufacturing facilities, automotive or industrial sectorsElectronics firms, automation, power systems, and industrial sectors

Motor Design Engineers focus on creating and optimizing electric motors, while Electrical Design Engineers work on broader electrical systems and circuits. Both roles require electrical knowledge but differ in their specific applications and design scope.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Motor Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Motor Design Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical or mechanical engineering, with expertise in electromagnetics, motor theory, and CAD-based design, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with simulation tools such as ANSYS Maxwell, MATLAB/Simulink, and experience with prototyping and testing equipment are highly valuable. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and address complex design challenges. These skills and qualities are crucial for creating efficient, innovative motor solutions that meet performance, safety, and cost requirements.

What are some common challenges Motor Design Engineers face when balancing performance requirements with cost constraints?

Motor Design Engineers often encounter the challenge of optimizing motor performance while adhering to strict cost and manufacturability limits. This involves selecting appropriate materials, designing for efficiency, and ensuring the final product meets safety and regulatory standards. Collaborating closely with manufacturing, procurement, and quality assurance teams is key to finding innovative solutions that balance technical specifications with budgetary constraints. Successfully navigating these trade-offs is essential for delivering a competitive and reliable motor product.

Job description

At Heart Aerospace we develop the ES-30, a regional hybrid-electric airplane with a capacity of 30 passengers, an electric zero-emission range of 200 km and an extended hybrid range of 400 km. Heart is targeting type certification of the ES-30 by the end of the decade.

Your mission

We are seeking a highly motivatedElectric Motor Design Engineer to join ourPropulsion team. You will lead the design and development of the HV electric motors for our aircraft's hybrid propulsion. You will interface across mechanical, thermal, power electronics, airframe, and battery teams to deliver a fully integrated and certifiable hybrid Electric Propulsion Unit (EPU).

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Design, develop, commission, and certificate innovative cutting-edge electric motors for hybrid propulsion system.
  • Lead and execute system-level tests, such as motor and propeller test stands.
  • Collaborate with suppliers to ensure delivery of integrated, and certifiable subsystems.
  • Perform avionics-optimized electric motor topology trade studies.
  • Create 2D/3D CAD models of electric motors in drawing tools (e.g., Siemens NX).

You'll Bring These Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of professional experience designing high voltage, high power electric motors.
  • In depth understanding of permanent magnet motor design, principles, modeling, and analysis techniques.
  • Proficiency with JMAG, Ansys Maxwell, RMxpert, or MotorCAD.
  • Design and optimize electromagnetic active parts for manufacturing and certification.
  • Hands-on experience with integration of propulsion and/or powertrain test stands, including instrumentation, controls, and mechanical assembly.
  • Strong understanding of electric motors manufacturing processes such as stator winding, lamination stacking, and stator varnishing.
  • Strong knowledge of motor manufacturing, heat treatment, statics, dynamics and mechanics of materials.

These Qualifications Would Be Nice to Have:

  • Understanding of certification requirements (EASA CS-23/25 or FAA FAR Part 23/25).
  • Knowledge of aerospace airworthiness standards, e.g. DO-254, and DO-160.
  • Develop and maintain design failure mode and effects analysis (DFMEA).

Education:

  • Master's or PhD degree in Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering or related fields.
