Job description

Utah Housing Corporation (UHC), located in West Valley City, Utah, is seeking to hire a full-time Loss Mitigation Specialist to support the Mortgage Servicing Department. This position works directly with homeowners experiencing financial hardship by providing guidance on available home retention and disposition options while ensuring compliance with investor, insurer, and regulatory requirements. The Loss Mitigation Specialist manages the intake and processing of loss mitigation applications, supports borrowers throughout the workout process, and works collaboratively with internal departments, investors, and government agencies to help homeowners achieve the best possible outcome. This role plays an important part in supporting UHC's mission of serving Utah's housing needs through finance and innovation.

UHC's mission is to serve Utah's housing needs through finance and innovation. We are guided by core values of integrity, respect, communication, teamwork and collaboration, and growth and development, which shape how we work together and support the communities we serve. We are looking for someone who embodies these values and takes pride in contributing to a purpose-driven organization.

This Loss Mitigation Specialist reports to the Default Manager and is classified as a non-exempt position, and pays between $39,042 and $51,054 annually, based on education and experience. UHC offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes employer contributions to Utah Retirement Systems (URS), PEHP traditional health plans, and a high-deductible health plan with HSA contributions. Additional benefits include dental and vision coverage, flexible spending accounts, group term life and accident insurance, and retirement options including 401(k), 457, IRA, and Roth IRA plans. Employees also enjoy an onsite fitness center, 30 minutes of paid daily exercise, a convenient onsite market, flexible work hours, and limited remote work opportunities within a supportive, coaching-oriented environment.

The Loss Mitigation Specialist serves as a primary point of contact for homeowners seeking mortgage assistance by responding to inbound inquiries, explaining available loss mitigation programs, and guiding borrowers through the application process. This role processes new loss mitigation applications, follows up on missing documentation, manages trial payment plans, and communicates regularly with borrowers, authorized third parties, vendors, investors, and government agencies to ensure timely and accurate processing. The position also makes outbound calls, sends correspondence, and documents all borrower interactions within the mortgage servicing system while maintaining exceptional customer service throughout the loss mitigation process.

This Loss Mitigation Specialist supports the operational success of the department by maintaining compliance with investor, insurer, regulatory, and state requirements throughout the life of each loss mitigation file. Responsibilities include performing quality control reviews of Partial Claims, Loan Modifications, and other loss mitigation documents, preparing and processing Electronic Funds Transfers (EFTs), submitting executed documents to HUD within required timeframes, filing investor retention claims, and monitoring active files to ensure all required milestones are completed accurately and on schedule. The position also assists with processing application intakes, posting funds, updating servicing records, managing workflow, and protecting UHC's interests by coordinating with internal departments when property status changes occur.

The Loss Mitigation Specialist collaborates with team members across Mortgage Servicing to respond to borrower inquiries, support collection and default servicing efforts, and prepare for internal and external audits. Responsibilities include identifying potential compliance issues, recommending process improvements, maintaining accurate servicing documentation, and ensuring adherence to investor guidelines and company policies. The Loss Mitigation Specialist contributes to a collaborative, customer-focused environment while helping homeowners navigate challenging financial situations with professionalism, empathy, and attention to detail.

Qualified candidates should have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent. A bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, is preferred. Candidates should also have at least one year of experience in mortgage servicing, collections, loss mitigation, or a related field. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong organizational and analytical abilities, proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word, knowledge of basic accounting and finance principles, and the ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining a high level of accuracy. The ideal candidate is detail oriented, customer focused, self-motivated, and committed to delivering exceptional service while ensuring compliance with investor and regulatory requirements.
