Job description


Specimen Processor/Accessioner

We are seeking a detail-oriented and organized Laboratory Accessioner to join our team. This role is responsible for accurately receiving and accessioning specimens into the laboratory system, troubleshooting issues, and maintaining proper documentation and storage procedures. The ideal candidate will have strong computer skills, attention to detail, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Specimen Handling and Documentation

  • Receive and accession specimens into the laboratory system with accuracy.
  • Handle and process a high volume of biological specimens (including urine, blood, and stool), which may include aliquoting, labeling, and preparation for in-house testing or reference laboratory send-outs.
  • Troubleshoot specimens that do not meet laboratory acceptance criteria.
  • Maintain contact with the ordering client or appropriate agency to obtain necessary documentation corrections or insurance prior-authorizations.
  • Document and track specimens placed on hold pending insurance verification or order corrections.
  • Document, track, and notify the ordering client or appropriate agency of specimen rejections.

Storage and Quality Control

  • Maintain the specimen storage area, ensuring proper storage conditions, organization, and timely specimen discard.
  • Perform quality control of accessioning completed by other team members prior to releasing specimens for processing.

Compliance and Workspace Maintenance

  • Remain knowledgeable and competent in applicable laboratory policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Adhere to CLIA guidelines and standards.
  • Maintain an organized and clean workspace.

Inventory, Systems, and Additional Duties

  • Utilize laboratory and operational software systems to enter, verify, track, and clarify specimen and order information.
  • Use internal ticketing and documentation systems to resolve order discrepancies and confirm testing requirements.
  • Maintain an inventory of accessioning supplies and ensure the work area is properly stocked.
  • Perform other duties, tasks, and responsibilities as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Strong computer skills with data entry proficiency, ensuring speed and accuracy.
  • Ability to multitask and perform efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and communication abilities.
  • Capability to work effectively in both team and individual settings.
  • Previous experience with specimen accessioning (preferred).
  • Familiarity with medical or pharmaceutical terminology (preferred).
  • This is an entry-level position; prior laboratory experience is preferred but not required. New graduates or candidates with an interest in the medical or laboratory field are encouraged to apply.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to alternate between sitting and standing for extended periods and perform repetitive motions for prolonged durations.
  • Capacity to lift and move containers of specimens, supplies, or equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Strong focus and attention to detail in a dynamic environment.
  • Capacity to handle and prioritize multiple tasks under pressure.
