How much do molecular cloning jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 17, 2026, the average yearly pay for molecular cloning in the United States is $80,687.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $69,000.00 and $98,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Molecular Cloning position, and why are they important?

Success in Molecular Cloning requires a deep understanding of molecular biology techniques, DNA manipulation, and gene expression, typically supported by a relevant degree in biology, biochemistry, or a related field. Familiarity with laboratory equipment such as PCR machines, gel electrophoresis apparatus, and software for sequence analysis is essential, along with adherence to biosafety protocols. Effective troubleshooting abilities, attention to detail, and strong teamwork and communication skills are important soft skills in this role. These skills ensure the accurate construction and analysis of recombinant DNA, driving successful project outcomes in research and biotechnology settings.

What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities for someone working in molecular cloning?

Professionals in molecular cloning generally spend their days designing and executing experiments to construct, amplify, and analyze recombinant DNA, often using techniques like PCR, restriction enzyme digestion, and DNA ligation. They routinely prepare reagents, maintain detailed laboratory records, and analyze experimental data to verify successful cloning. Collaboration is common, as molecular cloning specialists often work closely with research scientists, laboratory technicians, and bioinformaticians to achieve shared research goals. Additionally, maintaining a sterile and organized lab environment is critical to ensure the integrity of experiments and reproducibility of results.

What is a Molecular Cloning job?

A Molecular Cloning job involves the process of assembling recombinant DNA molecules and directing their replication within host organisms. Scientists in this role use techniques such as PCR, restriction enzyme digestion, and ligation to insert genetic material into vectors like plasmids. These constructs are then introduced into bacterial, yeast, or mammalian cells to study gene function, produce proteins, or develop genetically modified organisms. Molecular cloning is widely used in research labs, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical industries to advance genetic engineering, drug discovery, and synthetic biology.

Job Description

We are seeking a skilled Scientist - Molecular Cloning & Automation to lead plasmid design, DNA assembly, and scalable workflow development. You will apply advanced cloning strategies and build automated solutions to support high-throughput construct generation, ensuring quality, efficiency, and on-time delivery across multiple programs.

Job Responsibilities

  • Design and execute end-to-end plasmid workflows, translating protein or guide RNA sequences into verified, production-ready constructs
  • Select and apply appropriate cloning strategies (e.g., Golden Gate, Gibson Assembly, restriction-ligation) based on construct complexity
  • Develop, implement, and scale automated workflows for high-throughput plasmid production, including:
    • Liquid handling platforms (Hamilton STAR, Opentrons, Beckman Biomek)
    • Automated colony picking systems (e.g., QPix)
    • High-throughput miniprep processes
  • Establish and manage tiered QC pipelines (colony PCR, restriction digest, Sanger and/or long-read sequencing) while maintaining accurate construct documentation
  • Oversee CRO and vendor relationships for outsourced cloning and gene synthesis, including construct submission, timeline management, and QC review
  • Partner cross-functionally to deliver constructs on time, managing multiple concurrent requests with clear, proactive communication
