Job description

Job Title: UX Designer 

Location: Minneapolis, MN (Hybrid – Onsite minimum 2 days/week)
Client: Metropolitan Council (Metro Transit)
Duration: March 15, 2026 – September 15, 2026
Interview Mode: In-person interview (mandatory)


Project Overview

The Metropolitan Council is seeking a skilled User Experience (UX) Designer to support the Fare Collection System Upgrade, a large-scale, mission-critical initiative supporting Metro Transit’s core operations. This project involves designing both public-facing rider experiences and complex back-office administrative systems under tight timelines in a collaborative Agile environment.

The UX Designer will work closely with Product Owners, engineers, and stakeholders to create intuitive, accessible, and scalable digital experiences that meet accessibility standards, brand guidelines, and operational requirements.


Key ResponsibilitiesUser Research & Validation
  • Lead user research activities including interviews, contextual inquiries, and usability testing

  • Conduct 8–10 user interviews and 2–3 usability testing sessions per sprint

  • Synthesize research findings into actionable insights and design recommendations

  • Develop personas, journey maps, and task flows

UX & Interaction Design
  • Design intuitive, accessible, and consistent interfaces across web-based platforms

  • Create information architecture, workflows, and interaction models

  • Design 20+ key interface screens and workflows for core application modules

  • Audit and improve existing screens for usability, accessibility, and brand alignment

Design Artifacts
  • Produce:

    • Low-fidelity wireframes

    • High-fidelity mockups

    • Interactive prototypes

  • Deliver artifacts within 2-week Agile iterations

  • Provide annotated specifications and documentation for development handoff

Collaboration & Agile Participation
  • Participate in daily stand-ups, sprint reviews, and planning sessions

  • Collaborate with product owners and developers to iterate designs based on feedback

  • Present bi-weekly design reviews to stakeholder groups (10+ participants)

Accessibility & Standards
  • Ensure all designs meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA accessibility requirements

  • Apply inclusive and universal design principles

  • Maintain brand and design system compliance

Documentation & Knowledge Transfer
  • Deliver design documentation including style guides, component usage, and interaction standards

  • Prepare stakeholder presentations and demo materials

  • Provide knowledge transfer to internal teams


Deliverables
  • User Research Reports (bi-weekly/per sprint)

  • Wireframes & High-Fidelity Mockups

  • Interactive Prototypes (clickable, annotated)

  • Design System & Documentation (style guides, components, specs)

  • Stakeholder Presentation Decks

  • Sprint Status Reports and progress updates


Minimum Qualifications
  • 5+ years of UX design experience for web-based applications

  • 4+ years designing to WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards

  • 5+ years creating wireframes, prototypes, and mockups

  • 3+ years in information architecture and interaction design

  • 2+ years UX experience in Agile development environments


Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in UX Design, HCI, Graphic Design, or related field

  • Strong background in accessibility and inclusive design

  • Experience with user research, persona development, and usability testing

  • Experience with responsive and adaptive design

  • Visual/UI design expertise

  • Experience using Figma

  • Familiarity with:

    • Transit systems or fare/ticketing platforms

    • Payment systems or kiosk/ticketing interfaces

    • Back-office/enterprise tools

  • Understanding of front-end technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Blazor)

  • Experience using analytics and metrics to inform design decisions

  • Strong presentation, documentation, and stakeholder communication skills
