Job description

Position Overview:

The Senior Modular Designer is responsible for leading the design and documentation of modular systems including data centers, mechanical enclosures, and custom skid-based solutions. This position plays a critical role in the development of modular components and systems, collaborating closely with engineers, project managers, and production teams to ensure design intent, manufacturing efficiency, and technical accuracy.

This is a high-impact position that requires advanced experience in modular design, sheet metal fabrication, and mechanical integration. The role will support both the conceptual and technical phases of design, with a strong emphasis on standardization, documentation, and quality. This role will primarily support modular projects based in Houston, TX, where CDM's manufacturing operations are located.

This position offers a clear path to growth, with the opportunity to evolve into roles such as Modular Design Manager or Modular Engineering Lead as CDM expands its modular offerings.

Essential Functions:

  1. Design Leadership & Technical Development
  • Lead the design of modular data center systems, including mechanical enclosures, skid frames, and integrated components
  • Develop and maintain detailed 3D models and technical drawings using SolidWorks; support coordination with AutoCAD and Revit where needed
  • Establish and uphold MCAD departmental design standards, modular drawing templates, and design documentation workflows
  • Ensure all designs meet manufacturability and quality requirements aligned with DfMA principles
  • This position may guide junior designers or collaborate with subcontracted engineering resources on modular design packages.
  1. Project Collaboration & Support
  • Work closely with Project Engineers to create cost-effective solutions that meet technical and operational requirements
  • Assist in early project phases by producing conceptual layouts and modular designs for proposals and client bids
  • Participate in design reviews and value engineering sessions with internal teams and clients
  • Support field and factory teams during design implementation and installation phases
  1. Documentation & Process Management
  • Generate and manage complete shop drawing packages and "A" spec documentation
  • Maintain modular design files, version control, and documentation required for production and client submittals
  • Assist in developing and implementing ISO 9001-compliant documentation practices for modular products
  • Create technical reports, assembly instructions, and other supporting documentation as needed
  1. Cross-Functional Coordination
  • Coordinate with cross-functional departments (Engineering, Production, Procurement, Project Management) to ensure accurate translation of design into production
  • Communicate regularly with external vendors and fabrication partners to align on specifications, materials, and deliverables
  • Respond to internal RFIs and design-related inquiries throughout the project lifecycle
  1. Quality, Standards, & Innovation
  • Promote best practices in design for modular manufacturing and product scalability
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of CDM's modular product offerings and internal design workflows
  • Monitor industry trends in modular construction, manufacturing, and mechanical systems to inform design innovation

What You Bring To The Team

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Strong mechanical design fundamentals, including structural frame systems and sheet metal fabrication
  • Experience designing welded structures and mechanical enclosures
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet project timelines
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills
  • Collaborative mindset with a proactive, solution-oriented approach
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Self-driven and organized, with the ability to manage tasks independently
  • Customer-focused mindset with a solutions-oriented approach
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, evolving environment

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).
  • 10+ years' experience in mechanical engineering and design, with specific expertise in sheet metal design, structural frames using standard shapes, and welding practices.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks required; AutoCAD and Revit preferred).
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 standards and documentation
  • Experience supporting product development and quality systems
  • Background in customer proposal or bid design support
  • Knowledge of piping and electrical systems is a plus
