Job description

As energy availability becomes increasingly critical, there is no end to the scope and significance of your work - and to where it can take you at Stantec. Every day, we're problem-solving and collaborating on projects that are as challenging as they are impactful. Whether designing a transformational cross-country pipeline, optimizing facilities, verifying the safety and reliability of an asset, or in the field overseeing construction projects, you'll be joining a team of recognized industry experts on work that's critical to our clients and our communities. The Energy industry and municipal sectors are changing - and we're helping clients stay ahead of the change. Join a team that is working together with industry to deliver innovation for the long term on some of the most important and interesting projects around the world.
Our Cathodic Protection and AC Mitigation teams are a sub-set of both our Integrity team and our Energy business unit. Our Integrity group is a center of excellence for Stantec and as such, in addition to Energy we work with other Stantec divisions worldwide, such as our Water groups, to assist and design cathodic protection, stray current mitigation and integrity solutions for the municipal and water resources projects.
Your Opportunity
We are currently seeking a Senior AC Mitigation Engineer to join our Corrosion Prevention team. The primary roles of the AC Mitigation Engineer are:
  • To perform AC interference modeling
  • To design AC interference mitigation systems
  • To perform third party reviews of reports and designs related to corrosion, cathodic protection (CP), and AC interference.
  • To perform CP and AC interference system monitoring and evaluation.
  • To support clients' Pipeline and Facility Safety Management Systems.

Your Key Responsibilities
  • Modelling of complex pipeline and powerline geometries using specialized computer software (CDEGS), including extensive data input and analysis
  • Design of AC mitigation systems to reduce the risk of electrical shock to pipeline personnel, as well as integrity risks to the pipeline (coating damage, AC corrosion, etc.)
  • Assessment of CP and AC interference survey data
  • Design AC and DC interference mitigation systems
  • Third party review of CP and AC interference designs, reports, and inspection and commissioning data.
  • Perform engineering calculations (resistance, current distribution, ground potential rise, etc.)
  • Coordinate engineering aspects of installation of AC mitigation and cathodic protection systems
  • Develop detailed designs as required and collaborate with drafting personnel to prepare design drawing packages
  • Potential field work consisting of soil resistivity testing, structure potentials, right-of-way evaluations, and constructability assessments for AC mitigation and CP systems
  • Prepare technical assessment and design reports, as well as procedures and specifications
  • Support maintenance and updates to assessment criteria in accordance with evolving industry practices and stay abreast of emerging technologies
  • Delivery of accurate, timely and cost-effective integrity services that meet client, Stantec and industry/regulatory standards
  • Keep current on applicable pipeline and integrity codes and standards
  • Other integrity and pipeline engineering responsibilities including participating in varying projects on an as needed basis
  • Liaise with other divisions
  • Comply with Stantec's EH&S program, with a focus on safety in the field
  • Adhere to Stantec's Engineering Quality System
  • Establish and maintain positive client relationships

Qualifications
Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Good understanding of grounding, electromagnetic interference (EMI), and/or AC interference concepts, including field data gathering and troubleshooting
  • Experienced with Canadian and/or U.S. standards, practices and applicable legislation
  • Demonstrated technical proficiency and attention to detail
  • Sound interpersonal, communication, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Proven initiative, flexibility and adaptability
  • Strong work ethic and self-motivation
  • Excellent computer skills with emphasis on Microsoft Excel, Word and mapping tools such as Google Earth and AbaData
  • AMPP (NACE) certification and CP experience are an asset

Education and Experience
  • University degree in an engineering discipline (electrical engineering, with a background in electromagnetics, grounding, or interference, is preferred)
  • Licensed P.Eng., or eligible to obtain licensure (EIT / P.Eng. candidates with relevant experience will be considered)
  • Intermediate to senior engineers with prior experience in AC interference mitigation (3-5+ years preferred)
  • Experience with SES CDEGS software (or comparable electromagnetic/grounding simulation software) is highly desirable; candidates without direct CDEGS experience should demonstrate transferable modelling or simulation skills and a strong aptitude to learn it.
  • Please note: this is not an entry-level position. Some prior electrical, grounding, or EMI experience is required - recent graduates without exposure to these areas are unlikely to be a fit.
