What does a Modeling Simulation Engineer do?

A Modeling Simulation Engineer develops virtual models and simulations to analyze complex systems and processes. They use mathematical models, computer simulations, and data analysis to predict system performance and optimize designs before physical implementation. These engineers typically work in industries like aerospace, defense, automotive, and healthcare to improve efficiency, safety, and decision-making. Their role often involves coding, algorithm development, and working with simulation software to test real-world scenarios in a virtual environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Modeling Simulation Engineer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Modeling Simulation Engineer, you need a strong background in mathematics, physics, and computer science, typically supported by a relevant engineering or science degree. Proficiency with simulation software such as MATLAB, Simulink, ANSYS, or similar tools, and sometimes certifications in systems engineering or modeling methodologies, are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills set top candidates apart. These qualifications are crucial for accurately representing complex systems, translating requirements into effective models, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to achieve project goals.

What are the typical responsibilities and project stages for a Modeling Simulation Engineer?

Modeling Simulation Engineers are responsible for developing mathematical models, running simulations, analyzing results, and providing recommendations to improve system performance or design. Projects often begin with understanding client or stakeholder requirements, followed by designing models based on those needs and iteratively refining them as data is collected. Engineers work closely with design, hardware, and software teams to validate models and ensure alignment with real-world performance. Collaborating with colleagues and presenting findings to both technical and non-technical audiences are routine aspects of the job, making cross-functional communication vital for project success.

Job description

Interconnection Modeling Engineer

About Sungrow:

Sungrow North America is a leading provider of renewable energy solutions, specializing in the development and manufacturing of photovoltaic inverters and energy storage systems. The company offers a comprehensive range of products and services designed to optimize the performance and efficiency of solar power installations. Sungrow North America is known for its commitment to innovation, high-quality standards, and exceptional customer service, aiming to provide sustainable and reliable energy solutions to meet the growing demand for clean power.

The Position:

We are seeking an Interconnection Modeling Engineer to support all interconnection modeling aspects of our Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects across North America. This role will be responsible for developing, maintaining, updating, and troubleshooting interconnection models for BESS products, ensuring alignment with utility and regulatory requirements. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, detail-oriented, and eager to contribute to real-world power system modeling activities while gaining experience working closely with Sungrow’s Principal Engineer – Interconnection Modeling and the broader Technical Solution team.

The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with inverter-based resources, strong fundamentals in power system dynamics, and practical exposure to both software-based simulations and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing environments. This position plays a key role in executing key modeling tasks that directly support project approvals, system studies, and model validation efforts across multiple North American ISOs/RTOs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Interconnection Modeling Development and Support

  • Assist in developing, maintaining, updating, and validating BESS interconnection models.
  • Support power system studies such as short circuit, dynamic simulations, and transient stability analysis.
  • Help with model testing, debugging, and validation activities.

Python Automation for Modeling & Simulation

  • Develop Python scripts to automate PSCAD and PSS®E simulation workflows.
  • Contribute to automation frameworks for benchmarking, packaging, and version control.

Interconnection Compliance and Approval Support

• Assist in preparing modeling deliverables for utility, ISO, and regulatory approval processes.

• Help review and interpret interconnection requirements across North American markets.

Model Benchmarking, Troubleshooting, and Quality Assurance

  • Support benchmarking of PSCAD and PSS®E results with product specifications.
  • Troubleshoot discrepancies in model responses.
  • Review settings between product, EMT, and RMS models and ensure consistency.

Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) Testing & Validation

  • Build, operate, and maintain HIL testing environments for inverter-based resources.
  • Develop and execute HIL test suites for unit-level model validation, including control logic, protection functions, and dynamic response.
  • Analyze HIL test results and correlate hardware behavior with EMT and RMS simulation models.

Documentation & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Maintain clear documentation of modeling assumptions, validation results, and testing procedures.
  • Collaborate with product engineering, field service engineering, project engineering, and application engineering teams.
  • Support knowledge transfer and continuous improvement of internal modeling and testing practices.
  • Assist with repository management for modeling artifacts and datasets.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Master’s or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in power system modeling, grid studies, or inverter-based resource integration.
  • Solid understanding of inverter-based resource behavior, PCS controls, and grid support functions.
  • Experience with PSCAD, PSS®E, and TSAT.
  • Python proficiency for automation and data processing.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills.

Competencies

  • Experience with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) platforms for power electronics or power systems.
  • Familiarity with unit-level inverter control validation and plant-level controller testing.
  • Experience with EMT vs RMS model benchmarking.
  • Exposure to North American ISO/RTO interconnection requirements.
  • Background in BESS, solar PV, or other power-electronics-based generation

Work Location and Travel:

  • Full-time position; Houston, Texas hybrid
  • Occasional travel may be required.

Sungrow is an equal opportunity employer. Due to strong interest in this position, Sungrow will only reach out to those candidates who best meet the requirements. Thank you for your interest in Sungrow.
