What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Model Systems Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Model Systems Engineer, you need a strong background in systems engineering principles, mathematical modeling, and often a relevant degree in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with modeling tools like MATLAB/Simulink, SysML, and simulation software, as well as knowledge of systems engineering standards such as INCOSE certification, is typically required. Critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills set standout professionals apart in this field. These competencies ensure accurate system representations, effective collaboration, and successful project outcomes in complex engineering environments.

What is the difference between Model Systems Engineering vs Systems Engineer?

AspectModel Systems EngineeringSystems Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or higher in engineering, certifications in systems modeling (e.g., INCOSE)Bachelor's or higher in engineering or related field, certifications vary
Work EnvironmentDesign and develop system models, simulations, and architectureDesign, analyze, and optimize complex systems in various industries
Employer & Industry UsagePrimarily in aerospace, defense, and systems integration firmsWidely across technology, manufacturing, aerospace, and defense sectors

Model Systems Engineering focuses on creating detailed system models and simulations to analyze system behavior, while Systems Engineers oversee the entire system lifecycle, ensuring integration and functionality. Both roles require similar credentials but differ in scope and daily tasks.

How does a Model Systems Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project's lifecycle?

As a Model Systems Engineer, you will frequently work alongside software developers, hardware engineers, project managers, and quality assurance specialists to ensure that system models accurately reflect project requirements and constraints. Collaboration often involves participating in design reviews, integrating feedback, and updating system models to accommodate changes in project scope. Effective communication and the ability to translate technical details between different teams are crucial, as your models serve as the foundation for development and decision-making throughout the project. This collaborative environment fosters both technical and interpersonal growth, allowing you to develop a holistic understanding of complex systems.

What is Model Systems Engineering?

Model Systems Engineering is an interdisciplinary approach that uses models to support the design, analysis, and management of complex engineering systems. It involves creating abstract representations (models) of systems to better understand their behavior, requirements, and interactions throughout the system's lifecycle. This approach helps engineers identify potential problems early, optimize system performance, and ensure that the final product meets its intended goals. Model Systems Engineering is widely used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, defense, and software engineering.

Cahaba Federal Solutions is a rapidly growing small business specializing in intelligence, prototyping and integration, systems engineering, and technology development. Recognized as one of Huntsvilleโ€™s Best Places to Workยฎ for the past two years, as a Best Place for Working Parentsยฎ for the past 3 years, and as the winner of the Huntsville/Madison County Emerging Business of the Yearยฎ for 2025, Cahaba is a trusted partner in advancing national security through innovative solutions to critical challenges. We are committed to supporting our nation's most vital missions with dedication and expertise. Joining the Cahaba team means access to meaningful career growth, opportunities for personal development, and the chance to tackle engaging and impactful work.

Job Summary:

The Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) position will support the government customer with migrating legacy modeling, simulation, and analysis tools, algorithms, applications, and processes pertaining to missile performance analyses into a cloud-native digital engineering pipeline in a phased approach. The primary phase will focus on creating, updating, and refactoring MBSE models and libraries representing a full end to-end missile model; the models must be created in Systems Modeling Language (SysML). Elements of the SysML minimally include requirements, structures (e.g. mass moments of inertia), and parametric characteristics (e.g. specific impulse).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Host missile models in SysML using existing engineering data analyses with our customersโ€™ subject matter experts.
  • Create a scalable workflow for generating new missile models in SysML.
  • Apply and test that scalable workflow on a single missile model.
  • Constructively work with our customers to optimize the SysML model development workflow.
Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • Active TS clearance with SCI eligibility.
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in engineering, science, mathematics or related field.
  • 8 years of experience in systems engineering or related experience.
  • Proven experience applying MBSE to aerospace, mechanical or related engineering fields.
  • Basic knowledge of programming concepts and object-oriented programming.
  • Creating MBSE models via the SysML or other MBSE tools (e.g., Cameo Systems Modeler, Enterprise Architect, MagicDraw).
  • Having an MBSE certification and training (e.g. Object Management Group, International Council on Systems Engineering, etc.).
  • Ability to work with a diverse team of engineers to identify modelling requirements.
  • Demonstrated conscientious and collaborative work habits to help our customers adopt MBSE for missile performance analyses.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5 or more years of experience applying SysML for aerospace engineering applications (design of rocket propulsion systems, phased array antenna sensor systems, or other complex areas).
  • Experience with SysML v2.
  • Working knowledge of the United Architecture Framework and the Department of Defense Architecture Framework.
  • Modeling and simulation experience using AFSIM to include plugin development, architecture, and integration methodologies.
  • Proven experience developing models for weapon systems/vehicles for wartime scenarios.
  • Multi-disciplinary expertise with proficiency in at least one additional technical area.
