Model Based Design Engineer information

What is a model based design engineer?

Model Based Design Engineers are professionals who use mathematical and visual modeling techniques to design, simulate, and validate complex engineering systems. They typically work with tools like MATLAB/Simulink to create virtual prototypes, test control algorithms, and reduce the need for physical prototypes. This approach helps speed up the development process, improve accuracy, and lower costs, especially in industries like automotive, aerospace, and electronics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a model based design engineer?

To thrive as a Model Based Design Engineer, you need a strong background in control theory, embedded systems, and proficiency in modeling and simulation, typically supported by an engineering degree. Expertise with tools such as MATLAB, Simulink, and experience with software version control systems are commonly required, along with relevant certifications like MATLAB certification. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help in translating real-world requirements into accurate models and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure efficient development and validation of complex systems, minimizing errors and reducing development time.

What are some common challenges model based design engineers face when integrating models into existing embedded systems?

Model Based Design Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating simulation models into legacy embedded systems, as these systems may have hardware or software constraints not accounted for in the initial model. Ensuring model fidelity while optimizing for real-time performance and memory usage requires careful design and iterative testing. Collaboration with firmware and hardware teams is crucial to address compatibility issues and streamline deployment. Adopting standardized modeling practices and maintaining clear documentation can help mitigate integration risks and facilitate smoother handoffs between teams.

What is the difference between Model Based Design Engineer vs Simulation Engineer?

AspectModel Based Design EngineerSimulation Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Engineering, certifications in MATLAB/SimulinkBachelor's or Master's in Engineering, experience with simulation tools
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, software development, automotive/ aerospace industriesResearch labs, testing environments, aerospace/automotive sectors
Industry UsageDevelops models for control systems, embedded softwareCreates simulations to test systems, validate designs

The main difference is that Model Based Design Engineers focus on creating and implementing models for system development, often using tools like MATLAB/Simulink, while Simulation Engineers primarily develop and run simulations to validate and test these models or systems. Both roles require strong technical skills and often overlap, but their core responsibilities differ in focus and application.

Job description

Model-Based Systems Engineer - Level III
Department: IEW&S
Employment Type: Full Time
Location: Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD
Compensation: $95,000 - $170,000 / year
Description
*** This position is contingent upon ACI's successful award of the associated government contract.
*** All prospective applicants will be contacted to discuss contract timelines, the process associated with hiring for this role, and award decisions progress.
Augustine Consulting, Inc. is a Woman-Owned Small Business professional services provider of engineering and technical services to the United States Government. We seek an experienced Model-Based Systems Engineer to serve as part of ACI's Government Programs Team supporting CPE ISW for IEW&S HQs SETA.
Duties and Responsibilities:
A Models-Based Systems Engineer at ACI is responsible for focusing on leveraging model-based systems engineering tools and practices to enable efficient planning, integration, and validation of tactical applications supporting situational awareness platforms. A successful Model-Based Systems Engineer at ACI will:
  • Develop and maintain SysML/UML-based models to support system architecture, behavior, interface definitions, and requirements traceability for ATAK plugins and core functionality.
  • Translate stakeholder requirements into functional models that inform software development and integration plans.
  • Support system decomposition and definition of component-level interactions across ATAK plugins, core services, and TAK Server interfaces.
  • Collaborate with software developers, integration engineers, and program stakeholders to ensure alignment between modeled architecture and software implementation.
  • Participate in Agile Scrum ceremonies, technical interchange meetings (TIMs), and design reviews as a representative of the systems engineering team.
  • Support verification and validation activities by aligning test cases with modeled requirements and scenarios.
  • Contribute to documentation deliverables, including interface control documents (ICDs), system design documents (SDDs), and modeling standards.
  • Design and implement network solutions, including LAN/WAN/VPN architectures and secure topologies.
  • Troubleshoot complex system and network issues, utilizing both hands-on diagnostics and automated tools.
  • Apply network security best practices to protect systems and data from internal and external threats.
  • Write scripts for automation and system management using Python and PowerShell.
  • Collaborate on multidisciplinary R&D projects, integrating scientific and engineering approaches.
  • Maintain technical documentation including system diagrams, configuration guides, and SOPs.

A Model-Based Systems Engineer who fits our team is:
Dynamic: contributes energy and enthusiasm to our daily tasks, to the team's interactions, and to the Company's mission.
Thorough: possesses an unparalleled work ethic; produces complete, even polished products; persistent; mission-focused; asks "Why?" as often as necessary to get to the root of the matter.
Mature: respects others' opinions, beliefs, and culture; listens to ideas, shares thoughts, and works independently and together to contribute insights to the company's leaders.
Forthright: speaks with conviction; argues based on understanding, respectfully
Inquisitive: seeks deeper explanations of how systems work, not the surface-level description of the actors involved; goes beyond "stick-fetching" to connect the unconnected.
Timely: shows up, ready to think, prepared to get on with the day's assignments; contributes analytical insights that meet time-sensitive, reasonable requests.
Honest: knows what's right, what's legal, what's appropriate; acts accordingly.
Required Qualifications
  • Due to the sensitive nature of this work, a Department of War security clearance is required. All applicants must provide proof of U.S. Citizenship.
  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain a Top Secret w/SCI security clearance.
  • Bachelor's degree in related field and eight (8) years of experience, or
  • Master's degree in a related field and five years of experience
  • Solid understanding of network protocols and services (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP).
  • Hands-on experience with network operating systems (Windows Server, Linux).
  • Proficiency with network design and configuration tools.
  • Proficiency with modeling tools such as Cameo Systems Modeler, MagicDraw, or Enterprise Architect.
  • Familiarity with AWS services such as EC2, ECS, RDS, and associated cloud architecture.
  • Excellent troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong communication and technical writing skills.
