What is a mobile service technician?

Mobile service technicians are professionals who travel to a customer's location to diagnose, repair, and maintain equipment, vehicles, or devices, rather than working from a fixed service center. They often work in industries such as automotive repair, electronics, or appliance servicing. Their primary advantage is providing convenient, on-site support, saving customers the hassle of transporting products. Mobile service technicians typically bring the necessary tools and parts with them to complete most jobs during their visit.

What is the difference between Mobile Service vs Mobile Technician?

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mobile service technician?

To thrive as a Mobile Service Technician, you need strong diagnostic abilities, hands-on technical knowledge in automotive or equipment repair, and typically a relevant certification or vocational training. Familiarity with diagnostic tools, mobile service management apps, and vehicle repair systems is essential. Excellent customer service, time management, and problem-solving skills help technicians build trust and adapt to client needs on the go. These skills ensure efficient, high-quality repairs, customer satisfaction, and success in a field-based, dynamic work environment.

What are some of the most common challenges faced by mobile service technicians, and how can they be addressed on the job?

Mobile Service Technicians often encounter challenges such as diagnosing complex issues on-site without access to a full workshop, managing tight schedules, and adapting to different working environments. To address these, it's important to stay organized, keep up-to-date with technical training, and maintain a well-stocked service vehicle. Communication skills are also crucial, as technicians regularly interact with customers and coordinate with office staff to ensure efficient service delivery.

Job description

Residential Service Plumber

Burns & McBride \u007C New Castle, DE
Guaranteed 40 Hours Every Week

Pay: $35–$45/hour base pay + commission + monthly revenue/performance bonuses

Build Something New—Without Starting From Scratch

Burns & McBride is launching a residential plumbing department, and we’re looking for an experienced service plumber who wants more than another seat in another truck.

Since 1949, Burns & McBride has earned the trust of homeowners throughout Delaware and the greater Wilmington area by delivering dependable home services and standing behind our work.  Now, we’re bringing that same reputation and customer-first approach to residential plumbing.

You’ll have the rare opportunity to help build a new department while benefiting from an established brand, an existing homeowner customer base, and a company that has served the community for more than 75 years. Your experience and ideas will matter as we establish our plumbing standards, processes, and reputation.

We’re looking for a self-driven professional who takes ownership of their day. You diagnose accurately, communicate clearly, present repair and replacement options confidently, and create revenue by educating homeowners—not pressuring them.

Why You’ll Love Working Here

We don’t just offer jobs—we build careers. Here’s what you can expect as part of our team:

  • Industry-leading compensation: We believe in recognizing and rewarding excellent performance through hourly pay plus uncapped commissions and performance based bonuses.
  • Guaranteed 40 hours every week: Count on consistent hours and dependable earning potential.
  • Fully stocked warehouse and parts runners: Spend less time tracking down materials and more time completing calls.
  • New, clean, fully stocked truck: Arrive prepared with a professional service vehicle ready for the day’s work.
  • Comprehensive health benefits: Affordable, high-quality medical, dental, and vision coverage for you and your family.
  • Paid time off from day one: Start earning PTO immediately because time away from work matters.
  • 401(k) with company match: Build long-term financial security with support from the company.
  • Parental leave: Receive support as your family grows.
  • Training and development: Continue building your technical, customer-service, and leadership skills through our Service Professionals Academy and Resource Center.
  • Annual performance reviews: Receive regular feedback and recognition, with opportunities to be rewarded for your growth and results.
What You’ll Do
  • Diagnose, repair, and replace residential plumbing systems, fixtures, and equipment
  • Independently manage a full daily service schedule
  • Thoroughly evaluate plumbing concerns and identify the root cause—not just the immediate symptom
  • Explain findings clearly and present homeowners with appropriate repair and replacement options
  • Help customers make informed decisions through honest education and professional recommendations
  • Complete repairs safely, efficiently, and to a high standard of quality
  • Build trust with homeowners and consistently deliver an outstanding customer experience
  • Meet performance and revenue goals by identifying legitimate customer needs and offering the right solutions
  • Accurately document diagnoses, estimates, recommendations, and completed work using mobile service software
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and properly stocked service vehicle
  • Protect customers’ homes and leave every work area cleaner than you found it
  • Minimize callbacks by completing work correctly the first time
  • Provide feedback and ideas that help strengthen the new plumbing department
What We’re Looking For
  • Five or more years of residential service plumbing experience
  • Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills across residential plumbing systems
  • Proven ability to independently manage a daily service schedule
  • Experience presenting repair and replacement options to homeowners
  • A history of delivering exceptional customer service while consistently meeting revenue goals
  • Confident, professional, and customer-focused communication skills
  • Strong organization, follow-through, and time-management abilities
  • Comfortable using mobile technology and service-management software
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
  • Commitment to safety, professionalism, and high-quality workmanship
  • A self-driven mindset and willingness to take ownership of each service call
