Must-Have: Level 1 trauma experience, previous travel experience, prior experience working on a dedicated neuro unit
Description:
The unit has 54 beds with a combination of semi-private rooms.
The nurse to patient ratios are 1:4-5 during the day shift and 1:5-6 during the night shift.
Common diagnoses include stroke, spine surgery, seizures, brain tumors, head injuries, and other neuroscience conditions, with some medical overflow.
Experience with titrating drips is required, specifically with heparin titrated drip based on PTT.
A charge nurse is available on each shift and does not typically take an assignment unless staffing is short.
A house supervisor is also present 24/7.
Patient care technicians are available with a ratio of 1:9-10 during the day and evening shifts, and 1:10-12 at night.
Registered nurses are responsible for troubleshooting high flow equipment, mainly used for stable COVID cases, although it is rare to encounter COVID on this unit.
There are telemetry technicians, and nurses are not required to read their own strips, as a house-wide telemetry system is in place.
Nurses work 12-hour shifts and requests for scheduling are accommodated when possible.
Every other weekend commitment is required, covering both Saturday and Sunday shifts.
Holidays are also required on an every other basis.
There is no call or standby requirement.
Nurses may float in rotation with the rest of the staff; however, they will only perform skills they are competent in if floating to an urgent need outside of the general unit.
No specific scrub color is required, but tattoos must be covered while on duty, and only ear piercings are allowed.
Orientation consists of two days with an educator and one day of patient care with a preceptor.
