TMS International is seeking an experienced and driven Operations Manager to lead the Metal Recovery (MR) operations at the Gary Works location. This position is responsible for overseeing all aspects of pit digging, pot hauling, drop balling, slag processing, and daily operational execution within a demanding steel mill environment.

The ideal candidate will have strong leadership, planning, and problem-solving abilities, along with experience managing large crews and heavy equipment operations in a union environment. This role is responsible for operational performance, safety, budgeting, and P&L accountability while leading a team of managers, supervisors, operators, and support personnel.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all daily MR operations including:
  • Pit digging
  • Pot hauling
  • Drop balling
  • Slag processing
  • Lead and manage a team of 6 managers along with operating engineers and hourly personnel
  • Ensure safe, efficient, and productive execution of operations
  • Responsible for departmental P&L performance, budgeting, forecasting, and cost control
  • Develop operational plans to support production demands and customer expectations
  • Coordinate closely with maintenance, operations, and customer personnel
  • Drive accountability related to:
  • Safety
  • Productivity
  • Equipment utilization
  • Attendance and workforce management
  • Monitor operational KPIs and identify opportunities for improvement
  • Support labor relations and workforce management in a union environment
  • Assist in long-term planning for staffing, equipment, and operational growth

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 7-10 years of experience in heavy industrial operations, steel mill operations, mining, slag processing, or similar environment
  • Prior management experience overseeing multiple departments, supervisors, or managers
  • Strong understanding of:
  • Heavy mobile equipment operations
  • Industrial production environments
  • Operational planning and execution
  • Experience with:
  • Budgeting and P&L management
  • Workforce planning
  • Productivity improvement initiatives
  • Experience working in a union environment is required
  • Strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills

  • Experience in slag processing or metal recovery operations
  • Experience working inside integrated steel mill operations
  • Familiarity with large mobile equipment fleets and maintenance coordination
