Job description

Leidos' Defense Systems Mechanical Design & Analysis Department is seeking a Mobile Radar Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team in Huntsville Alabama designing the next generation of sensors to protect America and its allies. You will perform mechanical design of the Army Long-range Persistent Surveillance-Mobile (ALPS-M) product.
As a member of the design team, you will use SolidWorks CAD software and Windchill PLM software daily to turn ideas into designs. Then you'll work alongside the production team to turn your designs into hardware. You might be asked to help integrate and install the hardware, and then you'll work with the testing team to put your hardware into action.
This role requires a strong technical contributor and leader, proficient in applying technical principles, theories, and concepts in mechanical engineering, structural design, electronics enclosure design, and thermal management. You will be responsible for developing and proving out solutions to technical problems and issues that may be difficult or unclear while collaborating with other members of the design, systems, manufacturing, and structural, and thermal analysis teams. This person must take ownership of their assigned tasks - driving solutions to meet technical requirements while meeting aggressive schedules.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Structural and enclosure design via Solidworks CAD software, drawing generation in accordance with ASME Y14.100 & Y14.5, and producing technical data packages in accordance with MIL-STD-31000

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering from an ABET-accredited university
  • 4+ years of applicable experience or 2+ years with MS degree - seeking to fill multiple roles from mid to senior level
  • Strong SolidWorks user
  • Experience with drawing generation in accordance with ASME Y14.100 & Y14.5
  • Basic understanding and application of GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and tolerance stack-up analysis
  • Strong attention-to-detail, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Self-starter with a demonstrated ability to work independently and in team environments
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Active DoD security clearance (or eligibility to obtain and maintain clearance)

Preferred Qualifications
  • Windchill PLM experience
  • Design and/or Integration experience in the following areas:
    • Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles (FMTV) and trailers
    • Mobile tactical equipment
    • Power generation
    • Mobile tactical equipment
    • Payload erector systems
  • Basic understanding or experience with radars or other advanced sensing technologies
  • Experience with large steel structures including welded structures, bolted assemblies, and machined parts
  • Experience with aluminum sheet metal parts, electronics racks and enclosures, and environmental control units
  • Experience with metal part finishes and coatings
  • Experience supporting rapid development, prototyping, or fast-paced DOW engineering programs
