What does a mobile app designer do?

A Mobile App Designer is responsible for creating the visual elements and user experience of mobile applications. They design the layout, color schemes, icons, and interactive features to ensure the app is both visually appealing and easy to use. Mobile App Designers work closely with developers and stakeholders to translate ideas into functional and attractive mobile interfaces. Their goal is to enhance usability and provide a seamless experience for users on smartphones and tablets.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mobile app designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mobile App Designer, you need proficiency in user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) design, a solid portfolio, and often a degree in graphic design or a related field. Expertise with design tools such as Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, and knowledge of mobile platform guidelines (iOS and Android) is typically required. Creativity, collaboration, and strong communication skills help designers translate ideas into intuitive and engaging app experiences. These skills ensure the creation of user-friendly, visually appealing apps that meet user needs and business goals in a competitive digital landscape.

What are some common challenges mobile app designers face when collaborating with developers?

Mobile App Designers often encounter challenges in ensuring their design vision is accurately implemented by developers. Differences in platform capabilities, device constraints, and interpretation of design specifications can lead to discrepancies between the original design and the final product. Clear communication, regular feedback loops, and the use of collaborative tools like design systems or shared prototyping platforms help bridge these gaps. Building strong relationships with developers and understanding basic technical limitations also contribute to smoother project execution.

What is the difference between Mobile App Designer vs Mobile App Developer?

Job description

Do you want to be the founding engineer who sets the technical bar for CoCounsel Legal on mobile? Are you the kind of engineer who is as comfortable making architecture decisions as writing production code - and who gets energy from building something brand new? If so, this role is built for you.

As Lead Software Engineer for the CoCounsel Legal Mobile App, you will be the technical anchor of a new mobile engineering team - setting the foundation for how CoCounsel Legal is experienced on iOS and Android. You will drive architecture decisions, establish engineering standards, mentor engineers on the team, and personally contribute to delivering the product, working closely with the Engineering Manager and Product to shape what gets built.

About the Role

In this opportunity as Lead Software Engineer CoCounsel Legal Mobile App, you will:

  • Establish the technical foundation of the CoCounsel Legal mobile app, making early architecture decisions on platform strategy (native vs. cross-platform), project structure, state management, offline handling, and CI/CD that will define how the team builds for years.

  • Deliver hands-on engineering contributions, writing production-quality iOS and/or Android code across core features - from the main agent chat experience to file access, authentication, and notifications.

  • Integrate with the CoCounsel backend, working closely with Agent Core and AI Platform teams to connect the mobile app to agent APIs, streaming responses, file and workspace infrastructure, and user context.

  • Define and uphold mobile engineering standards, establishing code review practices, testing approaches, performance benchmarks, and accessibility requirements for the team.

  • Mentor and support mobile engineers, providing technical guidance, pairing on complex problems, and helping engineers grow their skills in a greenfield environment.

  • Partner with Product and Design, translating requirements and designs into technically sound, performant mobile experiences - pushing back constructively when tradeoffs affect quality or feasibility.

  • Contribute to the broader Application Experience engineering community, sharing mobile-specific insights and patterns with peer teams building the web and desktop experiences.

About You

You're a fit for the role of Lead Software Engineer CoCounsel Legal Mobile App if your background includes:

  • 7+ years of software engineering experience, with significant depth in iOS (Swift/SwiftUI) and/or Android (Kotlin/Jetpack Compose) development.

  • Proven experience leading technical direction on a mobile product - architecture decisions, technology choices, and engineering standards - not just execution.

  • Track record shipping high-quality, production mobile applications to real users in a professional or enterprise context.

  • Experience integrating mobile apps with cloud APIs including streaming, authentication (OAuth/SSO), and file handling.

  • Strong sense of mobile UX quality - deep familiarity with platform conventions, accessibility, and performance expectations on iOS and Android.

  • Ability to mentor and elevate other engineers through code review, pairing, and design discussions.

  • Clear technical communicator - able to explain tradeoffs to both engineers and non-technical product partners.

Additional preferred qualifications include:

  • Experience with cross-platform frameworks (e.g., React Native, Flutter) and understanding of when to use them vs. native.

  • Background in legal tech, productivity software, or other professional-services SaaS products.

  • Experience building AI-powered mobile features - streaming chat interfaces, voice input, contextual actions.

  • Familiarity with enterprise mobile deployment (MDM, app configuration, SSO) and associated security requirements.d in the US.
