Description
The Assistant Controller supports the Controller in overseeing all accounting and financial reporting functions for Milford Mining Company's mining and mineral processing operations. This role is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial data and maintaining strong internal controls. The Assistant Controller works closely with operations, maintenance, and metallurgical teams to provide financial insight that drives business performance.
The successful candidate will be required to work in the office three days per week during the first ninety days of employment, at which time other hybrid options will be discussed.
Essential Functions

1. Financial Reporting & Close Process
  • Assist in managing the monthly/ annual close processes to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting.
  • Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and support schedules.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and company accounting policies.
  • Support preparation of financial statements and management reports.

2. Cost Accounting & Operational Support
  • Work closely with Controller or designate to support cost accounting functions, including:
    • Inventory valuation (ore, in-process, finished goods)
    • Standard costing and variance analysis
    • Production cost tracking (crushing, milling, flotation, leach, SX/EW)
  • Partner with operations and maintenance teams to analyze:
    • Production costs
    • Equipment downtime impacts
    • Cost improvement opportunities

3. Internal Controls & Compliance
  • Maintain and enhance internal controls over financial reporting and operational processes.
  • Create and maintain policy documents and SOPs for all accounting activities.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, regulatory requirements, and audit standards.
  • Support internal and external audit activities, including preparation of schedules and documentation.

4. Accounts Payable & Receivable
  • Oversee or support AP/AR functions, ensuring accuracy and timeliness, coding and approvals.
  • Assist with purchase requisition review and approval
  • Assist with invoice review and approval
  • Maintain fixed asset schedule and ensure proper depreciation
  • Ensure proper monthly expense accruals

5. Project Accounting
  • Provide oversight and support of project management staff with small projects and CAPEX tracking, including budget to actual spend and in service asset classifications.

6. Systems & Process Improvement
  • Support improvements to accounting systems, ERP, and reporting tools.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline processes, improve accuracy, and reduce close timelines.
  • Assist with implementation of new systems or upgrades as needed.

7. Team Support & Leadership
  • Provide guidance and support to accounting staff.
  • Assist with training, mentoring, and development of team members.
  • Serve as backup to the Controller as needed.

Supervisory Responsibilities
This position will provide functional oversight to accounting staff.
Work Environment
This position operates primarily in an office environment with regular interaction in an active mining and processing facility. Occasional exposure to plant conditions, including noise, dust, and industrial operations, may occur. Appropriate PPE is required when entering operational areas.
Physical Demands
The employee is primarily seated but may occasionally be required to stand, walk, and navigate plant facilities. Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds may be required. Vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
Position Type / Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position, typically Monday through Friday. The person in this role will be required to work in the office three days per week during the first ninety days of employment, at which time other hybrid options will be discussed. Additional hours may be required during month-end close, audits, and budgeting cycles.
Travel
Limited travel may be required for training, audits, or corporate meetings.

Requirements
Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting
  • Experience with cost accounting and inventory accounting
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting/ERP systems
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills

Preferred Education and Experience
  • CPA or CPA candidate
  • Experience in mining, manufacturing, or heavy industry
  • Familiarity with:
    • Standard costing and variance analysis
    • Fixed asset accounting and capital project tracking
    • ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, or similar)
  • Experience supporting audits and internal controls
