Common Search & ComparisonYesYes

The main difference between a Mine Production Engineer and a Mine Surveyor lies in their focus areas. Mine Production Engineers oversee the planning, coordination, and optimization of mining operations, ensuring efficient extraction. Mine Surveyors, on the other hand, specialize in mapping, measuring, and documenting the mine's physical layout and boundaries. Both roles are essential in mining projects, often working closely but with distinct responsibilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mine Production Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mine Production Engineer, you need a solid background in mining engineering, geology, and mine planning, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree and industry certification. Familiarity with mine design software (such as Surpac or Vulcan), CAD systems, and health-and-safety regulations is crucial. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication skills help you coordinate with multidisciplinary teams and address operational challenges. These competencies ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective mining operations in a dynamic and often hazardous environment.

What are Mine Production Engineers?

Mine Production Engineers are professionals responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing the extraction of minerals from mining sites. They ensure that mining operations are carried out efficiently, safely, and in compliance with environmental and regulatory standards. Their duties often include designing mining processes, supervising staff, optimizing production, and troubleshooting operational issues. Mine Production Engineers also play a key role in improving productivity and minimizing environmental impact. This role requires a solid understanding of geology, engineering principles, and modern mining technologies.

What are the main challenges faced by Mine Production Engineers during shift operations, and how can they be addressed?

Mine Production Engineers often face challenges such as coordinating multiple teams, dealing with equipment breakdowns, and ensuring safety protocols are followed in high-pressure environments. To address these, effective communication, proactive maintenance planning, and regular safety training are crucial. Additionally, staying adaptable and making quick, informed decisions help minimize downtime and keep production targets on track. Collaborating closely with geologists, equipment operators, and safety officers also enhances operational efficiency.

Job description

About Jerritt Canyon
The Jerritt Canyon deposit was discovered in 1972, and the first gold production from the property occurred in 1981. The Jerritt Canyon property contains 30,821 hectares of mining claims located in the mining-friendly state of Nevada. First Majestic acquired the Jerritt Canyon Gold Mine from Sprott Mining Inc. on April 30, 2021. In May 2023, operations were suspended to prioritize exploration and technical studies. Jerritt Canyon is now entering a new phase of evaluation and planning, requiring substantial technical support to advance the work necessary for a potential future restart of operations.
The Opportunity
The Chief Mine Engineer is responsible for providing technical leadership and oversight of mine planning, engineering, and surveying functions at Jerritt Canyon. This role ensures that mine plans are optimized, executable, and aligned with site and corporate objectives while supporting safe, efficient, and cost-effective operations.
Working closely with Operations, Geology, and site leadership, this position drives short, medium, and long-term planning strategies, manages technical risks, and ensures the delivery of high-quality engineering support to enable operational success and future site development.
Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership and technical oversight of the Mine Planning and Survey teams, ensuring alignment with operational and strategic objectives.
  • Oversee the development and execution of short, medium, and long-term mine plans, ensuring optimization of safety, production, and cost performance.
  • Ensure life-of-mine (LOM) plans and budgets are developed, maintained, and aligned with site and corporate financial targets.
  • Lead the integration of mine design, sequencing, scheduling, and infrastructure planning into cohesive and executable plans.
  • Provide technical direction for underground mine design, including stope design, sequencing, and operational optimization.
  • Oversee resource model updates, cost evaluations, and technical analyses to support planning decisions.
  • Ensure timely delivery of accurate and high-quality technical support to Mine Operations and Capital Projects.
  • Establish and monitor performance metrics and KPIs to track plan adherence and identify risks or variances.
  • Lead the identification, assessment, and mitigation of technical risks, providing clear recommendations to site and executive leadership.
  • Communicate mine plans, risks, and strategies effectively to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive continuous improvement initiatives and enhance operational performance.
  • Integrate long-term infrastructure development and maintenance projects into mine planning processes.
  • Oversee surveying activities, including production monitoring (e.g., CMS surveys), data accuracy, and reporting.
  • Develop and implement standardized procedures and best practices for mine planning and surveying activities.
  • Foster a strong safety culture and ensure adherence to all safety and environmental policies.
  • Lead, coach, and develop engineering and surveying personnel to build capability and support business objectives.

The above duties and responsibilities are representative of the nature and level of work assigned and are not necessarily all-inclusive.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • 8-12+ years of progressive experience in underground mining engineering, with strong exposure to mine planning and operations.
  • Practical experience in underground mining operations and a strong understanding of underground mining methods and design.
  • Demonstrated experience in life-of-mine planning, budgeting, and technical evaluations.
  • Proficiency in mine planning and design software; experience with Deswik strongly preferred.
  • Experience leading or overseeing mine planning and/or surveying teams.
  • Strong understanding of cost modeling, scheduling, and production forecasting.
  • Proven ability to identify and manage technical risks and develop effective mitigation strategies.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to translate complex technical data into clear, actionable recommendations.
  • Strong commitment to safety, operational excellence, and continuous improvement.
