This role requires deep knowledge of materials, joinery, hardware systems, and fabrication methods, along with the ability to translate architectural intent and client vision into precise, buildable designs. The ideal candidate has substantial hands-on experience in high-end residential or commercial casework and is comfortable working closely with designers, project managers, and shop production teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop detailed shop drawings and 3D models for custom cabinetry, millwork, and built-ins using CAD/CAM software (e.g., AutoCAD, SketchUp, Cabinet Vision, Microvellum, or similar)
- Translate architectural and interior design plans into accurate, buildable millwork designs, including elevations, sections, and detail drawings
- Select and specify materials, finishes, hardware, and joinery methods appropriate to design intent, budget, and function
- Coordinate with architects, interior designers, and project managers to resolve design conflicts and ensure specifications align with overall project scope
- Conduct field measurements and site verifications to confirm dimensional accuracy prior to production
- Collaborate with production and shop staff to ensure designs are practical to fabricate and install, troubleshooting issues as they arise
- Prepare cut lists, material takeoffs, and production packages for the fabrication shop
- Review and redline drawings through revision cycles based on client, architect, or internal feedback
- Stay current on industry trends, materials, hardware innovations, and fabrication techniques
- Mentor junior designers or drafters as needed
- Support estimating and proposal development with accurate scope and material assessments
Required Qualifications
- 7+ years of experience in cabinet and millwork design, drafting, or a closely related field
- Proficiency in CAD software; experience with cabinetry-specific programs (Cabinet Vision, Microvellum, AutoCAD, Revit, or SketchUp) strongly preferred
- Strong working knowledge of woodworking joinery, materials (hardwoods, veneers, laminates, solid surface), and hardware systems (Blum, Hettich, etc.)
- Demonstrated ability to read and interpret architectural drawings and specifications
- Experience preparing shop drawings suitable for direct fabrication use
- Strong attention to detail and dimensional accuracy
- Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate across design, production, and project management teams
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a design-build or custom millwork shop environment
- Familiarity with CNC fabrication processes and how designs translate to machine programming
- Background in high-end residential, hospitality, or commercial casework
- Knowledge of AWI (Architectural Woodwork Institute) standards
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Interior Design, Architecture, Furniture Design, or related field (or equivalent professional experience)
Work Environment
