Job description

POSITION SUMMARY
Allegheny Millwork & Lumberyard is seeking an experienced Controller to lead the accounting function for our lumberyard operation. Reporting to the EVP / General Manager, the Controller owns the integrity of the division's financial reporting and serves as the EVP / General Manager's primary financial partner - translating operating results into insight that drives pricing, inventory, credit, and growth decisions.
This is a hands-on leadership role in a growing, privately held organization. The Controller directs a team of three, owns the monthly close, and manages the areas where a building products business wins or loses margin: product-line profitability, vendor terms, and customer credit. The role also works directly with the company's VP of Finance on consolidated reporting, forecasting, and the annual audit, offering meaningful visibility across a multi-entity group.
FINANCIAL REPORTING & ANALYSIS
  • Own the monthly close and deliver accurate, timely financial statements within the established reporting calendar.
  • Prepare and present financial reporting packages, variance analysis, and operating metrics to the General Manager and leadership.
  • Analyze gross margin by product line, department, and customer segment; identify pricing, cost, and mix issues and recommend corrective action.
  • Lead the annual budget and participate in the reforecast process, partnering with operations on volume, margin, and expense assumptions.
  • Interpret market and industry trends and their expected impact on demand, cost, and inventory positioning.

ACCOUNTING OPERATIONS & INTERNAL CONTROL
  • Direct all day-to-day accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, general ledger, and inventory accounting.
  • Maintain and continuously improve accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and compliance.
  • Own reconciliations of all significant balance sheet accounts, including bank, inventory, accrual, and intercompany balances.
  • Own payroll as well as all commissions for sales / employee packages
  • Maintain the fixed asset ledger and support capital expenditure requests, including delivery fleet and yard equipment.
  • Oversee purchase order controls and the maintenance of vendor cost and pricing files within the ERP system.

INVENTORY, COST & MARGIN MANAGEMENT
  • Oversee inventory accounting and valuation.
  • Track and collect vendor rebates, volume incentives, and freight recovery to ensure the business captures all earned margin.
  • Partner with purchasing and operations on inventory turns, aged and obsolete material, and working capital efficiency.

CREDIT, COLLECTIONS & CASH MANAGEMENT
  • Manage cash flow, including working capital planning, cash forecasting, and vendor payment timing to protect terms and discounts.
  • Evaluate and approve customer credit, including credit applications, references, guarantees, and ongoing limit review.
  • Direct collections activity and protect the company's security interests, including lien notices and filings, joint check agreements, and escalation of past-due accounts.
  • Manage vendor relationships to ensure accurate, timely payment and favorable terms.

TAX, AUDIT & COMPLIANCE
  • Manage sales and use tax compliance, including taxable versus exempt sales determinations and resale/exemption certificate administration.
  • Coordinate business, property, and other filings, including tangible personal property tax returns and unclaimed property reporting.
  • Prepare audit and review schedules and respond to requests from external auditors and tax preparers.
  • Support annual insurance renewals and audits, including workers' compensation and general liability, and manage certificates of insurance.

TEAM LEADERSHIP & BUSINESS PARTNERSHIP
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of three, setting clear expectations and providing coaching, review, and performance feedback.
  • Build cross-functional working relationships with sales, purchasing, and yard operations, serving as a trusted resource rather than a scorekeeper.
  • Contribute to the development and execution of strategies to grow the business, including new product lines, locations, and customer segments.
  • Champion a positive, accountable company culture consistent with our values.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Five or more years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including responsibility for a full monthly close.
  • Demonstrated experience owning inventory accounting and customer credit in a distribution, building products, manufacturing, or similar environment.
  • Working knowledge of an ERP system and advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience supervising or mentoring accounting staff.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain financial results to non-financial audiences.
  • High degree of accuracy, sound judgment, and the discretion required to handle confidential information.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • CPA or MBA.
  • Experience in a retail lumberyard, building materials dealer, or millwork operation.
  • Experience with Spruce or a comparable building supply ERP platform.
  • Familiarity with mechanic's lien and notice requirements applicable to material suppliers.
  • Experience with reporting and business intelligence tools and a demonstrated interest in process automation and data quality.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Primarily office-based, with regular presence in the yard.
  • Ability to move about the facility and yard, including uneven surfaces, with periodic exposure to outdoor weather conditions, dust, and noise.
  • Extended periods of computer and desk work, including frequent use of a keyboard, monitor, and telephone.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and move items weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Occasional travel between company locations.

EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY
Allegheny Millwork & Lumberyard is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We consider all qualified applicants for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, genetic information, or any other characteristic protected by applicable federal, state, or local law. Reasonable accommodations are available to qualified individuals with disabilities upon request.
