Job description

ABOUT THE WALTERS ART MUSEUM
The Walters Art Museum is among America's most distinctive museums, forging connections between people and art from cultures around the world and spanning seven millennia. Located in Baltimore’s Mount Vernon neighborhood, the Walters is free for all. The museum’s campus includes five historic buildings and 36,000 art objects.

Today, the Walters serves Baltimore and Maryland by embracing its role as educator and storyteller, using the collection as a vehicle of knowledge and cultural expression to support learning, dialogue, and community engagement. The museum is committed to public education, offering essential programs that help people to connect art to their lives. The Walters Visitor Promise aligns staff and volunteers across the museum to preserve and share the works in our care for future generations, partner with communities, and create welcoming, accessible experiences for visitors. The museum offers challenging and creative work opportunities by promoting collaboration and teamwork.

OVERVIEW OF ROLE
The Walters Art Museum seeks an outstanding junior scholar who wishes to pursue a curatorial career as a Wieler-Mellon Post-Doctoral Curatorial fellow. For its term of two years (with the possibility of renewal for a third year), the fellowship will provide curatorial training and support scholarly research related to the collections of the Walters. Widely regarded as one of the finest museums in the United States, the Walters possesses a collection that spans seven millennia of art from cultures across the world. Applications are currently sought from scholars of the Ancient Mediterranean World, with a preference for a specialist in ancient Egypt and/or Western Asia.

The Wieler-Mellon Fellow will be fully integrated into the Curatorial Department and have the opportunity to work closely with the curatorial team as well as staff in other parts of the museum including conservation, collections care, gallery interpretation, and education. The fellow will have access to the museum collection, research libraries both within the museum and in the region, and will enjoy all the professional privileges of the museum's staff.

The fellow will work closely with and be supervised by the curator of Ancient Mediterranean Art. Major duties will include helping to develop and realize a new installation of the permanent galleries of Ancient Mediterranean art, conducting research on and cataloguing objects in the collection, assisting with provenance research on objects in the collection, and engaging in general curatorial activities. In consultation with the supervising curator, the fellow also will develop a concrete project intended to complement personal research interests and will present this project as an exhibition or installation as well as a publish on this project. The fellow will be expected to participate in the museum’s education and public programs and deliver public lectures and gallery talks. The fellow will receive an annual stipend plus benefits and a travel allowance.

QUALIFICATIONS
Consideration will be given to candidates working in fields represented by the museum's collections and who possess the desired scholarly background.

A doctoral degree in archaeology, art history, or another closely related discipline must be or have been officially conferred within 3-5 years of the start date of the fellowship. No other fellowship may be active at the start of this position. Applicants from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

FELLOWSHIP PERIOD
The fellowship lasts for two years and can start as early as agreed upon with the successful candidate. The fellowship may extend for a third year by mutual agreement. This fellowship is based at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland.

APPLICATION SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
All application materials listed below must be submitted online, as PDF.

  • Cover letter addressing the following:
    • Your interest in the fellowship position
    • A statement, not to exceed 1000 words, that specifies your areas of research, how you might apply your skills as a Mellon Fellow at the Walters Art Museum, and outlines a potential project focused on objects in the Walters Art Museum collection.
  • Full curriculum vitae of education and professional experience
  • A writing sample, or a chapter excerpted from a completed dissertation
  • Three confidential letters of recommendation, which must include the applicant’s name as well as the full title and contact information for the recommender. Please use the following naming convention for these files: "Mellon Post Doc. Full Name Candidate. Recommendation Letter” and send to hrhelpdesk@thewalters.org
