Description Title: Instructor, CC (Occupational and Environmental Safety Management (OESM)) Position Number: 0084368 Hiring Unit: Transportation and Trades Programs (TECH I) Location: Honolulu Community College Date Posted: July 17, 2025 Closing Date: Continuous recruitment, review of applications to begin on August 18, 2025 Salary Information: Commensurate with Education and Experience; Minimum $5,154/month Monthly Type: 9-Month Tenure Track: Tenure Full Time/Part Time: Full Time Temporary/Permanent: Permanent Other Conditions: To begin approximately January 2025; general funds, contingent on satisfactory performance, operational and program needs, actual staffing requirements, pending position clearance and availability of funds. Position may be converted from 9-months to 11-months or 11-months to 9-months as operational needs are required. Duties and Responsibilities: To develop, maintain and teach courses in the Occupational and Environmental Safety Management (OESM) program.
Works under the guidance of colleagues to develop an understanding of student needs in discipline or area of primary responsibility. Works independently and with the guidance of colleagues to develop, select and implement strategies to meet student needs and to develop student learning outcomes. Develops curriculum and aligns courses to meet student needs and college objectives.
Prepares, develops, revises and implements course outlines, student learning outcomes, syllabi and related course materials as needed to meet program requirements. Serves as faculty mentor to students. Maintains subject matter currency and be willing to continually update courses to keep up with college and student needs to meet industry demands.
Assists in the development of courses that results in preparing students to take industry related certifications. Performs regular course assessments and participates in ongoing discipline, program, and institutional-level assessment. Implements adjustments to course content and professional practice to improve student learning in classes taught.
Participates in department, industry advisory meetings and division meetings. Related work activities include, but are not limited to, course scheduling, program budgeting, maintaining program articulation agreements, assisting in campus-related student activities; participating in faculty/administrative committees, campus and community service, and in-service training; maintaining an approved program of professional self-development; independently planning, organizing, and carrying out instructional and non-instructional assignments, and in collaboration with the Dean, Division Chair, faculty and staff. Works cooperatively with campus and off-campus organizations to develop courses for targeted groups; and to develop and teach non-credit courses.
Instructional assignments may involve distance education and Early College high school instruction. May require background check to teach at a Hawaii Department of Education (HIDOE) school. Must maintain at least one office hour per week for each class taught.
Must be available for evening and weekend teaching assignments, teaching on campus, and off-campus assignments (e.g. military bases, high schools, attending recruitment events.) and/or distance learning assignments for courses taught via the Internet. This is not a remote position
For some teaching fields, openings may only be available for classes offered on military bases or taught via the Internet. To teach on a military base, Department of Defense security clearance will be required. To teach Early College courses for HIDOE schools, background checks will be required.
Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree in Occupational Safety and Health or related discipline; OR Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety and Health or related discipline plus three years of related work experience; OR Associate's degree in Occupational and Environmental Safety Management (OESM) plus five years of related work experience; OR 15 college credits plus seven years of related work experience including training. Note: Minimum qualifications (degress and credits) must be earned from regionally or nationally accredited postsecondary colleges and universities recognized by the U.S
Secretary of Education and met by the effective date of appointment. If qualified applicants are not available, others will be considered as acting instructor. Desireable Qualifications: Willingness to keep abreast of technical development in the field of Occupational and Enviornmental Safety Management (OESM) Ability to work with a variety of colleagues from other disciplines, student support services and industry partners to help accomplish goals of the program.
Evidence of successful teaching in a community college setting or post secondary level. Experience in developing/modifying college level courses. Experience working with all student populations.
Possess supportive attitude towards student learning and be able create a nurturing classroom environment for allstudents. Demonstrated success serving as a mentor, advisor, or team leader. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively.
Demonstrated ability to function independently and as a member of a team. Experience with the use of technology to support instruction and student success, including but not limited to LMS,CRM, Early Alert and presentation software. A willingness to adapt to new technology platforms as needed for student and program success.
