Job description


About This Role

The Childcare Substitute Teacher provides temporary classroom coverage and support when regular teaching staff are absent. The Substitute Teacher is responsible for maintaining a safe, healthy, and nurturing environment while supervising children, implementing daily routines, and supporting age-appropriate learning experiences. The Substitute Teacher must be flexible, dependable, and able to work with children of various ages while following all center policies and state childcare regulations.


What You'll Do
Child Supervision and Safety
  • Provide constant supervision to ensure the safety and well-being of all children.
  • Follow all health, safety, sanitation, and emergency procedures.
  • Monitor children during classroom activities, meals, rest time, and outdoor play.
  • Respond appropriately to accidents, injuries, and emergencies.
  • Maintain required staff-to-child ratios at all times.
Classroom Support
  • Follow classroom schedules, lesson plans, and routines established by the lead teacher.
  • Assist with educational activities, learning centers, and age-appropriate play experiences.
  • Support children's social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development.
  • Encourage positive behavior and model appropriate interactions.
  • Help maintain an organized, clean, and welcoming classroom environment.
Daily Care Responsibilities
  • Assist children with handwashing, toileting, diapering, and personal hygiene as needed.
  • Serve meals and snacks while following food safety procedures.
  • Support nap and rest periods according to center guidelines.
  • Assist with transitions throughout the day.
Communication and Professionalism
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with staff, families, and administration.
  • Report any concerns regarding children's health, behavior, or safety to the Director.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding children, families, and center operations.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, dependability, and teamwork.

Requirements
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Previous childcare experience preferred.
  • Ability to work with children of various ages, including infants, toddlers, and preschoolers.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Dependable, flexible, and able to adapt to different classroom assignments.
  • Must meet all state licensing requirements for childcare personnel.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, squat, and sit on the floor for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry children and classroom materials up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to actively participate in indoor and outdoor activities.
  • Ability to respond quickly and appropriately in emergency situations.
Required Certifications and Clearances
  • Criminal Background Check
  • CPR and First Aid Certification (or willingness to obtain)
  • Completion of all required childcare licensing and orientation training
