The Role Responsibilities
We are seeking a skilled, organized, and student-centered individual to support the daily operation of the middle school library. The ideal candidate will build positive relationships with students, maintain an inviting learning environment, and manage a variety of responsibilities with accuracy, flexibility, and attention to detail.
Responsibilities may include:
  • Supervising students and reinforcing schoolwide and library expectations.
  • Assisting students with locating, selecting, checking out, and returning library materials.
  • Managing circulation tasks, overdue materials, student accounts, and library records.
  • Shelving, organizing, repairing, labeling, and processing books and other resources.
  • Training staff and student helpers to help with basic library functions.
  • Maintaining accurate inventories of books, technology, equipment, and library materials.
  • Creating engaging displays and helping promote books, reading initiatives, library programs, and school activities.
  • Supporting students with basic research, digital resources, technology tools, and responsible information use.
  • Assisting teachers and staff with locating materials and preparing resources for classroom use.
  • Supporting technology device distribution, collection, organization, and basic troubleshooting as assigned.
  • Helping maintain a library environment that is safe, orderly, welcoming, and responsive to the developmental needs of middle school students.
  • Supporting small groups, individual students, or classroom activities.
  • Assisting with book fairs, reading challenges, special events, and other library or schoolwide programming.
  • Completing clerical responsibilities, including maintaining records, preparing communications, organizing materials, and entering information into library or school systems.
  • Collaborating with teachers, administrators, technology staff, and other paraprofessionals to support student learning.
  • Performing other duties as assigned to support the effective operation of the library and school.

Role Requirements
The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or equivalent. Postsecondary coursework, an associate degree, previous library experience, school-based experience, or experience working with adolescents is preferred.
Successful candidates will demonstrate:
  • The ability to build positive and appropriate relationships with middle school students.
  • Strong organizational skills and careful attention to detail.
  • The ability to manage multiple tasks and adjust to changing priorities.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic proficiency with computers, digital resources, databases, and common educational technology.
  • The ability to learn library circulation, inventory, and student information systems.
  • Sound judgment, initiative, reliability, and consistent follow-through.
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • The ability to provide active student supervision and respond calmly and appropriately to student needs.
  • A commitment to confidentiality, professionalism, inclusion, and respectful interactions.
  • An interest in books, literacy, technology, and supporting student learning.

Physical responsibilities may include standing or walking for extended periods, moving throughout the library and school, reaching and bending to shelve materials, and lifting or moving books, boxes, devices, and equipment.
