Job description

POSITION TITLE: Assistant Principal 
DEPARTMENT: High School and Middle School
REPORTS TO: Principal and Superintendent 
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
WORK SCHEDULE: 225 days
DATE REVIEWED: 05/2024




TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: The Board of Education, upon recommendation of the Superintendent of Schools, shall appoint the Assistant Principal. The annual period of service for the Assistant Principal shall be 225 days. 

PRIMARY FUNCTION: To work with the principal in fulfilling the responsibility of promoting the educational well-being of each student in the school. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned. 

  • Communicates, collaborates, and cooperates with colleagues, supervisors, and students
  • Assist the principal with the ongoing development of the School Improvement Plan (SIP) and coordinate communication of the SIP with the School Advisory Council
  • Supports the principal in ensuring a safe school for students, staff, and community by continually reviewing and updating the schools' safety plan in accordance with district policies and procedures
  • Assists or schedules all non-athletic extracurricular events and personnel
  • Assists or supervises all scheduling and classification of all students
  • Supervise attendance and discipline
  • Maintains awareness of how decisions might impact students, teachers, and parents and/or guardian
  • Acts to promote accountability to the district Equity Action Plan and equitable educational learning experiences for all students
  • Collaborates with the Principal and the Student Success Coordinator to ensure implementation of restorative practices
  • Assists in the supervision and evaluation of all staff members
  • Is responsible for the general supervision of the cafeteria or common area, study halls and library.
  • Assists with building master schedule
  • Assist in the orientation of new teachers and with the in service education of faculty
  • Assists in the orientation of all students and helps to promote a positive wholesome attitude in all students in order to develop a high degree of loyalty to the school and community
  • Assists in the control, supervision, and evaluation of extra-curricular activities
  • Assigned, at various times, to carry out all the functions assigned to the building principal
  • Assists in the supervision of building maintenance and custodial staff
  • Acts in an advisory capacity to the principal in matters relation to the formulation and execution of school policies
  • Assists in developing and maintaining all safety and emergency programs such as conducting fire drills, tornado drills and crisis security
  • Works with teachers in solving classroom problems
  • Works with students in solving personal problems related to school
  • Participates in training programs to increase skills and proficiency related to the assignment 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervises students, volunteers and staff.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job shall be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the board's policy on evaluation of certified personnel.

REQUIRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: 

  • Graduate degree in Education, secondary education, curriculum and instruction, or secondary content area
  • Fifth year level certification in leadership (L-5) or proof of matriculation towards L-5
  • Valid Georgia Educators Certificate
  • Three years secondary classroom teaching experience
  • A working knowledge and understanding of Georgia Public Education rules, regulations, and laws
  • A working knowledge and prior experience implementing behavioral interventions and restorative practices
  • Prior experience addressing achievement gaps
  • Other education or experience deemed equivalent by the Superintendent

PREFERRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Sixth Year certification in leadership (L-6)
  • Three years experience as an Assistant Principal, Instructional Coach or School Improvement Specialist
  • Specialists level degree or higher in Education, or related subject area
  • Prior experience in one of the following areas: Gifted Education, Response to Intervention, or school organizational management
  • International Baccalaureate Programe experience 

EVALUATION: Performance of this job shall be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the board's policy on evaluation of certified personnel. 


WORK HOURS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  This position may require non-standard work hours (nights and limited occasional weekends) and the ability to lift and carry files and materials up to 30 pounds.  The employee is required to move freely throughout the facility, sit for prolonged periods of time.  Adequate vision, hearing, and manual dexterity to interact with people in writing, over the phone and in person are required.  Applicants must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations.
