What are Mid Level PHP Developers?

Mid Level PHP Developers are software professionals who have a few years of experience working with PHP, a popular server-side scripting language used primarily for web development. They are typically responsible for writing, testing, and maintaining code, as well as collaborating with teams to develop dynamic websites and web applications. Mid level developers are expected to have a solid understanding of PHP frameworks, databases, and web technologies, and can work independently on moderately complex tasks while also mentoring junior team members. Their role bridges the gap between junior and senior developers, allowing them to take on more responsibility and contribute to project planning and architecture.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mid Level PHP Developer, and why are they important?

A Mid Level PHP Developer should have a solid understanding of PHP programming, web development fundamentals, and experience with frameworks like Laravel or Symfony, typically supported by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with databases (such as MySQL), version control systems (like Git), and tools for debugging and testing is highly valued, along with knowledge of RESTful APIs. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are important soft skills for collaborating within development teams and delivering robust solutions. These abilities ensure the developer can efficiently build scalable applications, troubleshoot issues, and contribute to successful project outcomes.

What are some common challenges Mid Level PHP Developers face when working on legacy codebases?

Mid Level PHP Developers often encounter challenges when working with legacy code, such as outdated frameworks, inconsistent coding standards, and limited documentation. These issues can make it difficult to implement new features or fix bugs efficiently, requiring developers to spend extra time understanding existing logic. Collaboration with senior developers and open communication with the team are critical to navigating these challenges and promoting gradual codebase improvements. Additionally, it's important to balance the need for refactoring with ongoing project deadlines.

Job description

We are looking to hire mid-level and senior PHP/Symfony developers to join a retail ecommerce firm.

The Work

You'll be building and maintaining Symfony applications, working with APIs and integrations, and collaborating with project managers and clients to define and execute requirements. Code you write should be clean, testable, and something the next developer can actually work with.

Mid-Level (3+ years PHP, 2+ years Symfony) 90-120k

You're solid on the fundamentals and ready to execute on real projects with minimal oversight. You participate in code reviews, work within established architecture, and communicate clearly when requirements need clarification.

Senior (5+ years PHP, 3+ years Symfony) 125-160k

You own architectural decisions, lead code reviews, and work directly with clients and stakeholders on technical strategy. You can identify performance issues before they become problems and make recommendations that hold up under scrutiny.

Required for Both

  • Symfony 4, 5, or 6
  • Object-oriented design fundamentals
  • Doctrine ORM and dependency injection
  • Docker-based development environments
  • Git workflow fluency
  • Clear communication with technical and non-technical people

Nice to Have

  • Symfony Certification
  • Laravel experience
  • Elasticsearch or Apache Solr
  • RabbitMQ or similar messaging tools
  • API Platform and OpenAPI
  • GitLab CI or other CI/CD platforms
  • PHPUnit, Cypress, or other testing frameworks
  • Linux environment experience
  • Full-stack background

Must be authorized to work in the United States.
