What does a mid level mechanical engineer do?

A Mid Level Mechanical Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and testing mechanical systems and components. They typically work on projects involving machinery, engines, tools, or thermal devices, collaborating with other engineers and professionals to ensure products meet specifications and safety standards. At the mid level, these engineers may also oversee junior staff, manage parts of larger projects, and contribute innovative solutions to engineering problems. Their role bridges hands-on technical work and project management responsibilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mid level mechanical engineer?

To thrive as a Mid Level Mechanical Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical design, problem-solving, and engineering fundamentals, usually supported by a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and several years of relevant experience. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), finite element analysis tools, and project management systems is commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and teamwork abilities help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and manage project challenges. These skills and qualities are vital for driving project success, ensuring quality engineering solutions, and advancing in your engineering career.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a mid level mechanical engineer expect to handle on a typical team?

As a mid-level mechanical engineer, you can expect to work on a variety of projects, often taking ownership of specific components or subsystems within larger engineering efforts. You'll collaborate closely with senior engineers, designers, and cross-functional teams such as manufacturing and quality assurance to ensure your designs are feasible and meet project requirements. Typical responsibilities include conducting design analyses, creating CAD models, preparing technical documentation, and supporting prototype builds or testing. This role often balances hands-on technical work with project coordination, making strong communication and problem-solving skills essential.

Job description

LEAF Engineers is a frontrunner for success in providing comprehensive mechanical, electrical and plumbing, technology, and fire protection engineering design services. Our engineers are focused on system performance, reliability, flexibility, and ease of maintenance. Our work typically consists of large commercial projects, primarily award-winning K-12 schools. With an emphasis on teamwork, we reach beyond the traditional MEP approach to solve problems and integrate a more holistic style to our processes. Within LEAF, you will find a fast-paced environment with many opportunities to learn and accelerate your career.
You will help with the design of HVAC systems for commercial and educational facilities including load calculations, air-unit and chiller equipment selections, ductwork, pump and pipe sizing and layout. You would also be responsible for QA/QC construction documents, provide design ideas and solutions, and train or mentor other Designers, Operators or Engineers.
Your Impact:
Develop and modify Revit models of plumbing and HVAC systems and components according to established standards
Review Revit modeling techniques, based on input from the engineering team and project managers
Manage the execution of the design for Revit models and AutoCAD documents for multiple projects
Oversee equipment schedules, making changes and adjustments as necessary with input from the engineering team as required
Use Revit to manage the design for interferences with other building elements and resolve conflicts with other team members
Interpret consultant design documents and design the necessary HVAC system
Utilize knowledge of design techniques and principals to mentor and train other designers and engineers involved in the production of plans, sections diagrams, equipment schedules, and drawings.
Organize detailed documentation to track project development and design process
Produce coordinated floor plans, riser diagrams, and isometrics for complex HVAC systems
Monitor installation of equipment and systems to ensure compliance with design specifications and safety codes
Direct Jr. Staff on HVAC load calculations and equipment selection and sizing.
Here's What You'll Need:
6+ years of work experience with an engineering consultant
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering technology degree

Physical ability and willingness to conduct site inspections and fieldwork, i.e., climb ladders, walk on roofs, etc.
Ability to self-assess and command a high level of accuracy
Here's How You'll Stand Out:
PE Licensed
Strong oral, written, and communication skills
Excellent time-management and organizational skills
Project experience in K-12 educational market
Expert knowledge with MEP energy compliance calculations, and Title-24 documentation using Energy Pro software.
