Job Description

AECOM is seeking a highly motivated Mid-Level ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) Engineer to support our growing transportation practice in Indianapolis, Indiana, with a quick path to Deputy Project Management. This role offers the opportunity to work on innovative and impactful projects that enhance mobility, safety, and connectivity across the region. The ideal candidate will contribute to the planning, design, and implementation of ITS and emerging technology solutions, while also supporting select traffic engineering efforts. You will collaborate with a dynamic team delivering cutting-edge infrastructure projects and play a key role in advancing smart transportation systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the planning, design, and deployment of ITS infrastructure including traffic management systems, fiber optic communications, CCTV, dynamic message signs, and connected vehicle technologies.
  • Apply the systems engineering process to ITS and emerging technology projects from concept through implementation.
  • Prepare design plans, specifications, cost estimates, technical memoranda, and reports.
  • Perform ITS design tasks including device layout, communications network design, and integration of hardware and software systems.
  • Support traffic-related tasks such as traffic analysis, safety evaluations, and traffic control plan development.
  • Assist in the development of concepts of operations, system requirements, and system architecture documentation.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams including civil, electrical, and software engineers to deliver integrated solutions.
  • Review and provide guidance on technical work prepared by junior staff.
  • Ensure quality control procedures are followed and identify discrepancies in deliverables.
  • Deliver assigned work on schedule and within budget while meeting AECOM quality standards.
  • Coordinate with clients, agencies, and subconsultants to support project delivery and stakeholder engagement.
  • Support business development efforts including proposal preparation and identification of new opportunities.
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • BA/BS and 4 years of relevant experience demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education

Preferred Qualifications

  • 6+ years of experience in ITS engineering, with emphasis on design and implementation of transportation technology systems.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • Experience supporting state or local transportation agencies such as INDOT or municipal clients.
  • Familiarity with ITS communications systems, network architecture, and field device integration.
  • Experience with traffic engineering tasks such as traffic studies, signal design, or maintenance of traffic.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to prepare technical documentation and present to stakeholders.
